Events 41 maltatoday, Sunday, 29 June 2014 With the help of the HSBC Wa- ter Programme – Catch the Drop campaign, the Primary School A at St Margaret's College in Żabbar installed a complete plumbing and water tank system to utilise sec- ondary water from the underlying reservoir for cleaning and flushing. The Headmaster Alfred De- battista announced this commu- nity outreach programme during a school presentation for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils in the presence of a representative from the Min- istry for Energy and Health Rennie Mercieca, Żabbar Mayor Quinton Scerri, Manager - HSBC Water Pro- gramme Coordinator Glenn Bugeja and HSBC staff volunteers Antonia Farrugia and Jason Farrugia, who assisted the EkoSkola committee on voluntary basis in the school's Catch the Drop project. Following an address by National EkoSkola Co-ordinator Profes- sor Paul Pace, the young EkoSkola committee members were pre- sented with a certificate for their contribution by EkoSkola teacher Johann Gatt. The Eko Skola student committee president Emily Jones delivered a presentation on the Catch the Drop and EkoSkola ac- tivities carried out throughout the scholastic year. "Over 500 pupils attend the Żabbar Primary A and it is con- sidered as one of the largest Pri- mary schools in Malta," said Anna Napier, Assistant Headmistress. "Until now, the water stored in the underlying reservoir was not uti- lised. Thanks to the HSBC Water Programme - Catch the Drop Cam- paign, the school upgraded its in- frastructure and now benefits from lower utility bills." The Headmaster and Assistant Heads Napier, Jones and Muscat thanked the teachers, LSAs and staff, particularly Abigail Piscopo and Romina Coreschi as the teach- ers in charge of EkoSkola, music teacher Paul Portelli and art teacher Christian Scerri. During the morning activity, the pupils recited the song "Nibżgħu Għalih" sang by Catherine Por- telli highlighting the importance of saving water, composed by Iona Ghiller, one of the kindergarten as- sistants. The pupils presented their drawing entries for the Catch the Drop Drawing Competition that will be displayed during Malta's Summer Fair at Montekristo Estate in July 2014. "An educational water conser- vation programme, the Catch the Drop campaign raises awareness about water," said Bugeja. "A number of schools are making better use of this precious resource. Apart from the financial backing by the HSBC Water Programme, a number of HSBC employees are vol- untarily assisting eco-schools com- mittees in their school and com- munity outreach programmes." Various water projects are be- ing organised throughout a stra- tegic three-year campaign funded by HSBC Group and supported by Ministry for Energy and Health. The programme also encourages positive change towards the use of sustainable fresh water use in Malta. Through the Helen O'Grady Acade- my programme, the Vodafone Malta Foundation has once again provided students from Kalkara Primary School with a valuable opportu- nity to attend a developmental pro- gramme specifically desgined to tap into children's creativity and build on their social skills, whilst teaching English through drama. The program covers speech and articulation in English, but also gives children the confidence to par- ticipate in all aspects of their lives, enables them to ask questions, seek answers and share information with others. Children who mix well with others find it easier to make friends and adjust to new situations. "There is nothing better than to see children learn lessons for life through a progressive and rich syl- labus that also doubles up as fun and leave you with a lasting sense of achievement," said Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of the Voda- fone Malta Foundation. "Providing opportunities for chil- dren is at the core of the work car- ried out by the Foundation and expe- riencing the children's success gives us great satisfaction and joy." Alan Montanaro, Prinicipal of the Helen O'Grady Academy thanked the Vodafone Foundation for mak- ing this important initiative possible. "We strive to eliminate the crippling fear of making mistakes. Our system gives children a sense of creativity and allows them to absorb, repeat and create without fear of ridicule. After all, lessons learned through fun are never forgotten." Helen O'Grady International Di- rector, Nigel Le Page wrote, "We would like to thank the Vodafone Malta Foundation for their ongoing support of this project and for bring- ing our award-winning curriculum to so many children from diverse backgrounds." Head of Kalkara Primary School Miriam Mallia spoke about the re- sounding success of their yearly participation in the Helen O'Grady programme. "We are elated that the Vodafone Malta Foundation have ex- tended their support and made these classes possible to our students. "Class teachers have seen a tan- gible positive difference in our stu- dent's use and knowledge of English. We look forward to being part of this great experience once again next October."
