Former ministers Edward Zammit Lewis and Ma- nuel Mallia both secured their parliamentary seat and will be joined by Etienne Grech, who also returns to parliament, and newcomers Rosianne Cutajar, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Clayton Bartolo and Glenn Bed- ingfield. The seven seats which were up for grabs were va- cated by candidates who were elected on two districts including Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, ministers Chris Fearne, Helena Dalli, Edward Scicluna, Evarist Bartolo and Michael Falzon, as well as parliamentary secretary Silvio Schembri. The decision on which seats would be vacated by the respective candidates was taken by the Labour Party's executive. Zammit Lewis was the first to be elected yesterday, securing 2,477 votes on the eighth district. He ex- pressed his satisfaction at being elected immediately in the casual elections. "I would like to thank all those who voted for me, as well as those that didn't in this election," he said. "I am happy to have carried out my responsibilities during the last legislature with the greatest ability and integrity." Former parliamentary secretary Deborah Schembri loses seat on 12th district for 17 votes PAGE 4 Former tourism minister Edward Zammit Lewis was elected on the eighth district. He said that as an MP he would now continue working for the party and the country and had no doubt Prime Minister Joseph Muscat would find ways of involving him where he felt necessary. German MEP: 'I am sorry Muscat has stimulated socialist dinosaurs to attack myself and PN MEPs' PANA chair Werner Langen: 'Personal attacks show Muscat lacks understanding of democracy' TIM DIACONO The German MEP who chairs the European Parliament's Panama Papers committee has said that personal attacks aired at himself and two PN MEPs by Labour supporters in the wake of their criticism of Joseph Muscat betrays a "lack of understanding of democracy" by the Maltese government. Werner Langen's Facebook page has in recent days been targeted by Labour supporters, irked at his warn- ing to Muscat during last week's European Parliament session that his committee will not stop chasing him for answers on the Panama Papers scandal. To come up with a genuinely inspiring agenda is not easy; the PN should not rush. SEE EDITORIAL PG 9 PAGE 4 Glenn Bedingfield, elected on the second district, said that in the 25 years he had been working within the Labour Party, he had always made sure the people came first. "I must keep looking to the future and on how I can continue to prioritise the interests of the people, this time from parliament," he said.
