22 maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 13 SEPTEMBER 2017 Sport MOTORSPORTS Farrugia, Zammit, Sultana & Chircop dominate ASMK Gozo Events DURING the weekend between Friday 8th to Sunday 10th Sep- tember 2017 the Assocjazz- joni Sport Muturi u Karozzi (ASMK) successfully organ- ized the fourth Autocross cars event in Xewkija Gozo. This activity was carried out with the collaboration of the Min- ister for Gozo who earlier this month agreed to support two such annual activities that our association organizes in the Gozo island, one for the Auto- cross Cars which was held on Sunday 10th September 2017 and a second event organized for Enduro motorcycles sched- uled to be held at the beginning of next year. The work to form the tempo- rary course for the Autocross Cars lasted a week of several works made possible with the help of government workers and the ASMK Officials. This consisted of good manage- ment of human resources and machinery works. ASMK ma- chinery was shipped to Gozo to construct the new track togeth- er with other machinery during this week and supported by various benefactors including the Ministry for Gozo. The Association would also like to thank the 'Gozo Horse Racing Association' (GHRA) who accepted the request of ASMK to make use of part of the track to be temporarily changed in an Autocross cars track. This lasted for the week- end. Thanks also go for the co- operation of the Gozo Police Corpse, the Works Depart- ment of Gozo, the Gozo Sports Board, Road Construction Ltd, Gatt Construction Ltd., Wa- ter Services (WSC) Corpora- tion and finally but not least to Family Apap from Victoria to have assisted the ASMK Offi- cial in any difficulties encoun- tered during this week of the temporary track preparation. The main objective of this event was to raise funds in aid of Arka Foundation. Thanks too to the generosity of the spectators who attended to this activity held once a year and have contributed by their do- nation. During the presentation of trophies to the race winners Johnny Micallef Vice-President of the Association thanked all and said that if aid is again provided the Association will organize such events with both cars as well as with Enduro mo- torcycles in Gozo this coming year. Meanwhile, a look at what happened during the Sunday races where 31 competitors registered for this competition. These were divided into three classes, that for Modified cars driven by Maltese Autocross drivers, another class for Gozo Modified Cars drivers and a 3rd class for Standard Auto- cross drivers. In the Autocross class for Maltese drivers Jean Paul Grech on his Peugeot 106 and the VW Polo of Vince Farrugia registered the highest points of the day although they did not won all the three Heats. Other drivers who also quali- fied for the Final Race were Jonathan Camilleri driving an Opel Corsa, the Vauxhall Nova of Andrew Pisani, Karl Micallef on his Ford Fiesta and the Opel Corsa of Noel Zammit. Right from the start of this final Far- rugia made a good launch fol- lowed by Pisani and Micallef. The attention was drawn on Grech who advanced in each lap from last position until he reached Micallef who defended his position to the end. Shortly before the end of the Race Fi- nal Pisani's car developed a mechanical fault in one front wheel which forced his to loose his place. This Final result in Farrugia winning this class fol- lowed by Micallef and Grech. In the Gozo Autocross class we have seen this race domi- nated and won by Dominic Zammit on his Alfa Sud. Mar- vin Grima on his Opel Corsa followed in second place. Third place finisher was Joseph Agius on his Ford Fiesta whilst fourth place finisher is Mario Attard on his Ford Fiesta.
