maltatoday, SUNDAY 22 OCTOBER 2017 II Careers DEMANDS in the modern workplace are ever-increasing, often resulting in the blurring of lines between your personal time and your work. Whether you're a CEO, employee or self-proclaimed entrepreneur, you may find your- self working many more hours than you bargained for, even after you've left the office for the day. Though some may thrive off a work-a-holic schedule, most just end up feeling ill, tired and burnt-out. It's time to make the most of your working hours. Here are three fool-proof ways to make the best use of your time and thus, maximize your productivity levels Have a plan for each and every day Wake up every morning by writ- ing out a "plan of attack", which will help you get through your never-ending to-do list. "Do your best to spend the day working through the list you have made", says software engineer Bradley Anderson. "If you find yourself being inter- rupted or sidetracked, make a conscious effort to get back on task as soon as you are able". It's important, however, to not let your schedule become to regimented or static, as this too can result in feeling burnt out. Changes may occur and unex- pected situations may arise, so you must always be able to accommo- date for them. "We need to know when to follow the script and when to be ready to act on the fly", says Taylor Gallanter, co-founder of mobile barbershop. Prioritise meeting invitations and decline (when you can) A full calendar is usually the hall- mark of a busy person, but "busy" does not always equal "produc- tive". "When it comes to meetings, businesses too often live by the 'everyone's invited' mantra", says Dennis Collins, senior director of marketing. In truth, only 36% of all workers actively contribute in the meetings they attend, he added. This is a problem. It is your job to evaluate if your presence is necessary and deter- mine if you can afford to put other priorities on hold. If a meeting offers a low return on your time investment, simply do not attend. Simple. Stop trying to multitask Studies have shown that mul- titasking is not the productiv- ity boon everyone thinks it is! Stanford University research, for one, found that those constantly trying to multi-task "cannot pay attention, recall information, or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time". The truth is that once you're distracted, it takes an average of 25 minutes to return to the original task, therefore the time added from context switching is actually slowing you down. "It's much better to focus on one project for a few hours and produce quality work, than to risk working on multiple projects at once and get lost in the mix", says Collins. Also, if you think "working through lunch" is going to help you accomplish more, think again. Take that time to relax and clear your mind, instead How to properly plan your workday All interested candidates can apply by sending an email to hr@mcast.edu.mt by not later than end of business day of the 30th October 2017.
