NEWS 6 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 JULY 2018 IN an exercise carried out by MaltaToday in Gzira – where we visited six building sites in the town's several under-construc- tion areas – it emerged quite clearly that the regulations re- quiring that the level of noise be kept to a certain limit between the "siesta" hours of 2pm to 4pm, were being widely disregarded. The law stipulates that during that two-hour break period, no construction work generating more than a 65dB level of sound can take place. However, all six sites we vis- ited appeared to be breaking this rule, with work remaining ongo- ing during the break period, and noise levels exceeding those per- mitted for that time of day. A smartphone app, which we used to measure sound, regis- tered levels of around 70 to 75dB on five of the sites, while one other construction site, situated on The Strand, was generating a level of 8 dB and over. All site visits took place between 2pm and 3pm on Thursday. The PAUL COCKS AND MASSIMO COSTA A lack of human resources will lead any enforcement efforts to curb abuse, irregularities and negligence in the construction industry to fall far short of any realistic expectations, the presi- dent of the Association of Local Councils has said. Mario Fava told MaltaToday that – as in many other cases – lack of resources was the reason why he expected a new inspec- tion scheme, introduced by the Planning Authority, to ultimate- ly fail. In the beginning of June, parlia- mentary secretary for planning, Chris Agius, announced that all construction sites around Malta were to be inspected over a period of six weeks in order to clamp down on developers in breach of regulations. Immediately, inspectors from the PA joined the enforcement team of the Building Regulation Office to start carrying out joint Malta International Contemporary Art Space Call for Event Stewards The Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) is a dynamic space allowing people and audiences to see and experience a wide range of the most innovative and exciting contemporary works of art being produced internationally today.
