12 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 JULY 2018 CULTURE MADC brings Shakespeare to the park with 'As You Like It' IF 'All the World's a Stage', then the spectacular San Anton Gar- dens in Attard is certainly one of them. This July, Malta's oldest thea- tre company – MADC – will transform the beautiful gardens in front of the San Anton Palace into a unique open-air theatre to stage William Shakespeare's classic play 'As You Like It'. The show will be continuing a long-standing tradition for the Malta Amateur Dramatic Club. Following a performance of an abridged version of 'As You Like It' in San Anton Gardens in 1938, the Club began an annual summertime tradition of stag- ing a full-length Shakespeare play in English, performing it outdoors in the vast and beauti- ful San Anton Gardens. This one-of-a kind theatre event has since become a hugely popular annual performance, drawing in audiences of both locals and tourists alike. Both William Shakespeare enthusi- asts and beginners will enjoy these faithful adaptations of the Bard's work – performed under the stars, surrounded by his- toric architecture and stunning greenery, and making the most of our wonderful, warm sum- mer evenings. The ultimate romantic com- edy, 'As You Like It' tells the story of lovers Rosalind and Orlando who are exiled and become entangled in a hilari- ous game of love, lust and mis- taken identity. With the play being set in two very different worlds, both in a modern royal court and the enchanting Forest of Arden, the show's director, Philip Leone Ganado, intends to make full use of the magical setting of San Anton Gardens in summer, which provides the perfect backdrop for the Bard's famous English verse. And it's not just the gorgeous open-air theatre space that will make this year's 'As You Like It' at San Anton Gardens unmissable: the play will also feature some of Malta's top ac- tors including Roberta Cefai, Gianni Selvaggi, Steffi Thake, Chris Dingli, Stephen Oliver, Jonathan Dunn, Chiara Hyzler, Michael Mangion, Rambert Attard, Maxine Brimmer, Joe Depasquale, Becky D'Ugo and Daniel Formosa. Don't miss the chance to watch this amazing Shake- speare in the park, and book your tickets now to become a part of an historic local theatre tradition that's lasted 80 years (and counting). 'As You Like It' will be per- formed in English at San An- ton Gardens in Attard be- tween 13th and 22nd July. Further information and tickets are available online at www.madc.com.mt.
