COMMERCIAL 20 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 JULY 2018 Underwater clean-up by MAPFRE Group and Malta Skin Divers Club ONE skip load of rubbish was collected from under sea in un- der three hours, in the third edi- tion of the underwater clean up held by The Malta Skin Divers Club (MSDC) in collaboration with MAPFRE Middlesea and MAPFRE MSV Life. A number of employees from both companies as well as mem- bers of the MSDC participated in the event, which was recently held at Gillieru Marina. The event aimed at raising awareness about the negative effects of lit- tering marine ecosystems and habitats. The initiative forms part of the MAPFRE Volunteering Pro- gramme, where employees are encouraged to give back to the community by volunteering some of their time in such activi- ties. " It is sad to see what lies be- neath the clear waters, and what we are doing to marine life. Each year, we are surprised by the amount of rubbish collected from under the sea. We need to send out a clear message – that we are responsible for the world around us," Felipe Navarro, CEO at MAPFRE Middlesea, said. The Malta Skin Divers Club, formed in 1970, works to create awareness on the importance of sustainable fishing and to pro- mote safety while spearfishing and freediving. Throughout the year, it organises a number of events, including informative sessions for beginners to freediv- ing and spearfishing, underwater clean ups and spearfishing tour- naments. The club has evolved greatly in the past years, and is in the final stages of being registered with Sports Malta as well as with the council for Voluntary Or- ganisations. MSDC is a member of the Federation of Underwater Activities Malta and Federazz- joni Sajjieda Dilettanti. The French wine-producing region of Provence in southeast France makes some delicious and easy-drinking wines. Most of these wines are rosé – a dry, pale, pink style rosé. The cli- mate is Mediterranean, with many of the vines planted on southern facing slopes to avoid the fierce winds. Chateau d'Esclans is located on elevated land northwest of the ancient Roman city of Fre- jus on the Mediterranean coast. The château is known for its old Grenache vines which pro- duce grapes that offer greater concentration of flavour than do the younger vines. Some of the vines are over 90 years old. The château itself dates back to Gaullist times when it served as a lookout point to spot in- truders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus. The original châ- teau – of which only the cellar remains – dates back to before the 12th century. The chateau's cellar foundation is the oldest in the region. The current cha- teau is inspired by Tuscan villa design and was built during the mid-19th century. Sacha Lichine is the owner of Château d'Esclans as well as the winemaker together with Patrick Leon. His acquisition in 2006 of Château d'Esclans was a pivotal moment for Sacha who believed that rosé had an opportunity to increase pro- duction and expand the mar- ket outside the region. He has since built a world class brand with his rosé collection and has been recognised as a ma- jor contributor to the unprec- edented growth in the rosé cat- egory around the world. Even in France, consumers have in- creased their consumption of rosé over white wines. Sacha and Patrick set out to make an outstanding collec- tion of rosés that would be taken seriously as a year-round wine to drink. Patrick Léon crafted a lighter style of rosé, fresh, clean, mineral with a white peach expression and very dry, not sweet. The style has been very closely main- tained over the past 10 years, even as the grape sourcing has grown exponentially. The rosé is unoaked, vinified in stainless steel tanks, kept chilled at every stage of the process and made from a blend of Grenache, Rolle, Cinsault and Syrah, all hand-harvested. Sacha's Whis- pering Angel started the ball rolling and each year the win- ery runs out of this sought-after wine.
