| SUNDAY • 22 JULY 2018 maltatoday 13 TEATRU Manoel is dedi- cating a whole weekend to an in-house Maltese-spoken production collaborated with Grokk Teatru, a theatrical company which comes with several awards in their lug- gage, among which "Best Production Overall" at the Malta International Thea- tre Festival of 2016. BAXX BAXX is inspired by a book named 'Kulħadd ħalla isem warajh' written by Malta's fa- mous author, Clare Azzopardi which revolves around four particular characters living in a surreal world, depicting the obsession relationship which humans can have with things. Directed by Antonella Mifsud and André Agius, this production holds a myriad of thoughts surrounding obses- sion and surrealism, which you can continue reading about on Teatru Manoel and Grokk Teatru's Facebook pag- es. The three performances start at 9pm and take place at Teatru Manoel. Tickets can be bought from the section Upcoming Events on www.te- atrumanoel.com.mt , through an email on bookings@teatru- manoel.com.mt or by calling tel. 2124 6389. THE Notte Italiana is back for its second edition on Saturday 11 August at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. The Malta Concert Or- chestra, under the direction of Joe Brown, will be following on last year's great success. Once again, this concert promises to bring about the true Italian spirit to our shores through some of Italy's all-time favourite songs. Joined by sing- ers Alex Schembri, Neville Re- falo, Georgina, Olivia Lewis and Nadia Vella, the Malta Concert Orchestra will be performing some of Italy's greatest hits by Eros Ramazzoti, Rita Pavona, Laura Pausini, Mia Martini, Massimo Ranieri, Zucchero, I Pooh, Ricchi e Poveri and Ivana Spagna amongst others. The extensive song list in- cludes such songs as Come saprei, Maledettea primavera, Vivo per lei, Per colpa di chi, Fatti mandare dalla mamma, La solitudine, Con le mani and Sarà perchè ti amo. This concert promises to be yet another concert in a long list of activities by the Malta Concert Orchestra that are reaching out to people across the board through accessible and inspiring musical perfor- mances. Set up in 2017, the orches- tra (formerly known as the PBS Orchestra) is a versatile ensemble made up of profes- sional and semi-professional musicians who perform in formations of various sizes depending on venue and occa- sion. This year the MCO has already took part in the Festival L-Għanja tal-Poplu Żgħażagħ in February as well as the sec- ond edition of Suċċessi Maltin in April. Further appointments for this season include a jazz concert by the MCO Big Band (as part of the Malta Interna- tional Jazz Festival), L-Għanja tal-Poplu | Festival tal-Kanzu- netta Maltija in September as well as A Night at the Musicals and a Christmas Concert in December. The concert on 11 August will start at 8:30pm. Tickets are available from www.pjazzate- atrurjal.com. Students, families and senior citizens may benefit from special discounts. CULTURE ENVIRONMENT It's tiny, it's dark, it spends all day fishing far out at sea and only comes to land at night, and then only during the breed- ing season and – in Malta – only as far as Filfla! So little wonder that most people aren't familiar with this bird. But for all its low profile, the European storm-petrel has placed Malta squarely on the ornithological map. The reason is that Filfla hosts a breeding colony of 5000–8000 pairs of storm-petrels, and it is the biggest known colony of this bird in the Mediterranean. We know this because every summer BirdLife scientists land on Filfla – with special permits as the tiny island is a strict nature reserve – to ring and moni- tor these birds. In recent years one or two small colonies of storm-petrels have also been discovered along the main- land cliffs. The European-storm petrel (M: kanġu ta' Filfla) is closely related to a much larger and much more famous bird: the albatross. Friends of the Earth Malta supports the introduction of the Beverage Container Refund Scheme (BCRS) that the Ministry for the Environment, Sustain- able Development and Climate Change has pro- posed and has submitted recommendation to make the scheme more effective. We believe that it is important to make the BCRS more compre- hensive by extending it to other packaging that were not men- tioned in the BCRS proposal. This will not only increase re- cycling rates, but also increase consumer awareness of the im- portance of recycling, while not discriminating against specific businesses. The scheme should tackle all beverage containers including wine, spirits and liquors bot- tles. This would encourage the reach of higher recycling targets and also does not introduce a disadvantage towards produc- ers of certain beverages. The scheme should be wid- ened to the plastic packaging of other products that have a rela- tively low viscosity but are not beverages, such as food items (eg. Syrups, vinegar, dressings), and hygiene products (laundry liquid, liquid soap, household cleaning liquid products). The scheme should include other packaging (not plastic) that contain other food items, such as jars for pickles, etc. We agree with making no dis- tinction between size of bottle for the scope of the BCRS; this links to points proposed above on broadening the scope of the return scheme. 618.
