Pow- erlifting is a strength sport consisting of three main lifts: the squat, the bench press and the deadlift. Each athelete has three attempts on every lift and these attempts are done with maximal effort. This is the 11th edition of the National Powerlifting Championships in Malta, and even though power- lifting has been introduced in Malta a few years ago, the association has seen great achievements by its athletes on an interna- tional level. Malta in fact has over five world re- cords within the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation by both fe- male and male lifters. If you, or someone you know would like to take up this sport and start competing on a national and international level, you are encouraged to contact the Malta Powerlifting on facebook or send an email on mdfpa.wdfpf@gmail.com. With less than seven weeks out, there is still time to tweak your training to be able to compete with Malta's top powerlifters. The Malta Drug- Free Powerlifting Association National Championships Tour de France interrupted by farmers' protest and police tear gas A protest by local farm- ers brought stage 16 of the Tour de France to a halt yes- terday as bales of hay were thrown on to the road on the route from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon and police tear gas blew into the faces of some of the riders. The gas was used to dis- perse the protesters but it ended up blowing in the direction of the peloton, which led to the race being stopped at the 187 km-to- go point. The race continued after the brief hiatus. Yellow jersey holder Ge- raint Thomas and world champion Peter Sagan were among the riders rinsing their eyes after the incident, which stopped the stage for 15 minutes. It is not the first time that protesters have interrupted a prominent race, the most memorable incident hap- pening in the 1984 Paris- Nice, when French great Bernard Hinault punched one of the demonstrators.
