maltatoday | SUNDAY • 9 SEPTEMBER 2018 30 SPORTS FOOTBALL Maradona to coach second division Mexican team MEXICAN second division club, Dorados have issued a short video on their social media channels with the mes- sages 'Welcome Diego', and 'Make it a 10', with reference to the Argentina great's shirt number as a player. Although Dorados, who are based in Sinaloa state in north- west Mexico, gave no further details, Mexican newspapers said Maradona had been hired to replace Francisco Gamez. Dorados fired Gamez ear- lier on Thursday after a poor start to the season that brought three points out of a possible 15. The Mexican club are 13th in the 15-team league, joint bot- tom of the table. Maradona, 57, is consid- ered one of the greatest play- ers of all time after a career that peaked in 1986 when he captained Argentina to their second and last World Cup title. He has had short stints coaching clubs in Argentina and the United Arab Emirates but his longest spell in charge was with Argentina, whom he led at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Bolt takes break from Mariners for overseas commitment OLYMPIC sprint cham- pion Usain Bolt will put his efforts to carve out a foot- ball career on hold for a week to fulfill a "previously planned" overseas commit- ment, the A-League's Cen- tral Coast Mariners said yesterday. The 32-year-old Jamaican has been trialing with the Mariners for the last three weeks in the hope of secur- ing a professional contract for the 2018-19 A-League campaign. The break, from Septem- ber 9th to 16th had been agreed before he joined Mike Mulvey's team for training, the club said in a statement. Bolt made his debut for the Mariners on Aug. 31, coming off the bench for 18 minutes against a local amateur side. The Mariners won the game 6-1 but Bolt looked well short of match fitness and lacked the touch on the ball. Bolt himself said he would need at least four months to get up to speed. Bolt's attempt to trans- form himself from the face of global athletics to pro- fessional football player has generated huge public- ity for the Mariners, who finished bottom of the 10-team A-League last sea- son. It has also drawn scep- ticism, with Adelaide United coach Marco Kurz questioning Bolt's open- ended trial, saying the A- League should focus on recruiting proven talents and improving Australian youngsters. John Terry set to sign for Spartak Moscow FORMER England and Chel- sea captain Terry is a free agent after leaving Aston Villa during the summer, but has apparently been offered a tax- free £3million to extend his career in Russia. 37-year-old Terry will have a medical in Rome's Villa Stuart Clinic to speed up the move. He will replace Spartak's French defender Samuel Gigot, who is out for the season with a cruci- ate ligament injury. Terry was due to participate in a charity match at Celtic Park involving James Milner and Stiliyan Petrov yesterday after- noon, but posted an apology on instagram for failing to make it. "I am in the best condition I have been in for the last eight to ten years of my career," said Terry in an interview with the Daily Mail. "I've had a brilliant sum- mer, the first time in 20 years I have been able to get away like that with my family during the school holidays. I was away so much last year because I was fully committed to giving every- thing to Aston Villa, but now I am fully recharged." Terry won 78 caps for Eng- land.
