28 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 23 SEPTEMBER 2018 FOOTBALL Manchester United held by Wolves JOAO Moutinho's superb strike earned Wolves a draw at Man- chester United as the newly pro- moted visitors continued their strong start to life in the Premier League. The Portugal midfielder whipped in from the edge of the area as Nu- no Espirito Santo's side matched that of his former manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. Wolves were lively in the first half and unlucky to go behind as Fred netted his first goal for Unit- ed - the Brazilian firing in from just inside the box after Paul Pog- ba's excellent touch. United, with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson watching on during his first visit to Old Traf- ford since having emergency brain surgery in May, were look- ing for a third straight league win. The hosts were on top after the break, but Raul Jimenez's clever lay-off set up Moutinho for what was a deserved equaliser for the visitors. The draw keeps Wolves one point behind Manchester United in 10th, as Mourinho's side climb to fifth. Joao Moutinho celebrating after equalising for Wolves FORMER Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was honoured on returning to Old Traf- ford for the first time since undergoing emergency brain surgery in May Alex Ferguson, 76, was present for United's home Premier League game against Wolves yesterday. Prior to the match, the club asked fans to be in their seats 15 minutes early as United "pre- pare to honour Sir Alex's return". "It's bound to be emotional," said Ferguson of his return to Old Trafford. "It's obviously been a long journey but I'm making steps forward, doing what my son tells me and what the doctors tell me, so it's really good." Ferguson had emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage on the 5th of May and was in in- tensive care for several days at Salford Royal Hospital. His last public appearance at Old Trafford was on the 29th of April, when he presented former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with a commemorative trophy. "I'm a bit nervous, to be honest with you, may- be a bit tense really because the last game was Arsenal back in April," he added on MUTV. "It was a long time but it's great to be back. It's great to go back to the stadium and it's going to be quite emotional for me when the game starts. It had to happen some time and I've been looking forward to it. It was impor- tant getting the right time and the right rest before coming to a game."
