20 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 4 NOVEMBER 2018 COMMERCIAL It's not just about making things attractive DESIGN is not just a fancy-sounding word. It is not simply a process to make attractive-looking things. Far from it. First and foremost, it is about making our interaction with the environment more natural and complete. Design permeates many aspects of our lives and is applied to a wide variety of products of indus- try and handicraft items: from computer soft- ware to furnishing and household goods, from lighting equipment to jewellery, from electronic devices to video games. Some people even debate whether design is art or science. In fact, design is not exactly an art, nor a science. It takes elements from both. Design takes the creating aspect of art (as it is about crafting a product, whatever it is) and it also takes the problem-solving aspect of science. It exists primarily to address a particular need. To quote Steve Jobs: 'Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.' Design is at the service of the user and focuses on the user, so it combines aesthetic, economic and practical values. A novel design, whether your product is a table or a telephone, is one of the key factors that lead your consumers to prefer using your product over another. The design of a product can become synony- mous with your business or company. Like all intellectual property, such as trade marks and patents, a design can have monetary value; it is a business asset that can be traded or used as col- lateral. Indeed, your innovative design can act as your business signature. Registration may pre- vent others from infringing the design. That is, through registration, the owner of a registered design has the right to prevent third parties from making, selling, importing, exporting or using articles in which the design is incorporated or to which it is applied. Obtaining protection of your design is a prac- tical way of defining and protecting your inno- vation. You can submit a design application for protection of your design in Malta on www.ips. gov.mt. Further information on protection of a design in all the EU member states can be found on www.euipo.europa.eu. For more information on designs please visit www.commerce.gov.mt or call Business 1st on 144.
