17 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 7 NOVEMBER 2018 COMMERCIAL MALTA'S capital will be transformed into a hub for youth empowerment when it hosts two Commonwealth events during Youth Work Week. The third Commonwealth Conference on Youth Work takes place from 6-9 No- vember in Valetta under the theme 'Crosscurrents – steer- ing a course for youth work as a growth profession in the Commonwealth and in Eu- rope'. The three-day conference will bring together youth workers, academics and poli- cymakers to strengthen youth work as a profession and ad- vocate for its greater recog- nition in the development agenda. The conference will be pre- ceded by a meeting of the Commonwealth Youth Min- isterial Taskforce, when min- isters will discuss ways to gather resources and funding for empowering young peo- ple. Both events will promote strategies to raise the stand- ard of youth work, helping young people realise their full potential and maximising their contribution to develop- ment. Layne Robinson, the Com- monwealth's Head of Social Policy Development de- scribed the contribution of youth workers as invaluable. "This conference is signifi- cant because it brings togeth- er youth workers, researchers and policymakers from Eu- rope and the Commonwealth for the first time to share ide- as and discuss best practice. It will provide an opportunity to decide on practical actions that can strengthen the pro- fessional practice of youth work in our member coun- tries," he said. Delegates will discuss tai- lored legislative and policy actions to upscale youth work as a profession across the 53-member bloc, con- tributing to the mandate on youth empowerment agreed by Commonwealth leaders in April 2018. The meeting will also pro- vide an opportunity for Com- monwealth officials to engage with their European counter- parts to discuss ideas and ex- plore new forms of coopera- tion around youth work. The events are hosted by the Government of Malta's Youth Agency (Aġenzija Żgħażagħ) in partnership with the Com- monwealth. Malta Summit to bolster youth work DIZZ Group and Pinko teamed up to support this year's Pinko Pink Ball. The now yearly event was organised by the Marigold Foundation in col- laboration with the Armed Forces of Malta. It was part of a fundraising campaign to help give support and psychological help to persons suffering from Breast Cancer disease, which, if caught in the early stages, can be treated successfully. This event was held at the Barracks of the Armed Forces in Luqa and featured the par- ticipation of Winter Moods frontman Ivan Grech amongst others. DIZZ Group CEO, Diane Iz- zo was present for the evening and presented a contribution towards the campaign which was intended to generate the much-needed funds required to increase the awareness nec- essary in relation to breast can- cer treatment. DIZZ, Malta's leading fashion Group, believes that recogni- tion is instrumental in help- ing individuals take the tough decisions necessary to combat breast cancer. This way, wom- en can familiarise themselves further with their body and will identify any uncommon lumps which might develop over time. In these circumstances, time is truly of the essence. One of its popular many brands, Pinko, presented gifts to all female guests present for the event. Diane and the DIZZ Group pledged their support to the Marigold Foundation for other future initiatives related to Pink October to demon- strate a sound commitment to this cause. DIZZ Group and PINKO support the Pink October Ball FOR the tenth consecutive year, BNF Bank has supported the annual event that so many people eagerly wait for – the President's Solidarity Fun Run. The event, once again, drew thousands of young and old from all walks of life, who met up at the usual starting points, many in groups, in Santa Venera, Rabat, Paola and the University, to walk five kilometres or run 11 kilo- metres to St George's Square in Valletta. "It has been another re- sounding success," said Mi- chael Frendo, BNF Bank Chairman. "We have again mobilised people and chan- neled significant funds to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, which will be dis- tributed to needy charitable BNF Bank and its 10 years of fun runs for solidarity organisations after L-Istrina." "We believed in the Fun Run from the very start. Together with the Office of the Presi- dent and the many groups involved in its organisation, we built an institutional event that's part of Malta's annual calendar. Looking back at ten years of achievement is truly one proud moment! I am also very grate- ful to the BNF team members who, year after year, organise themselves without fuss for this event, to ultimately give a service to others." The collaboration between BNF Bank and the Office of the President that began way back in 2008 with an innova- tive fun run for charity, kick started what is now a verita- ble trend of fun runs in Malta organised by many associa- tions in aid of different noble causes. The first run attracted a few thousand walkers. Since then the participation rate has quadrupled and so have the interest, enthusiasm and vol- untary hands on board. With people collecting every com- memorative T-shirt from each edition, it can safely be said that the event has truly and genuinely engaged people. The President's Solidarity Fun Run is BNF Bank's flag- ship CSR event, in which all the Bank's corporate and so- cial responsibility efforts and activities culminate. The large collector of funds for philan- thropy however is but one of the Bank's activities in a wider remit of community action it embraces. Spurred by a com- mitment to pitch in towards a truly inclusive society, the Bank allocates funds to sup- port initiatives in the areas of education, health, heritage, culture and art.
