The mysterious incident involves French opera- tives, who used Malta as a base for tracking the movement of French weapons delivered to Libya. New information ob- tained by MaltaToday uncovers the length at which the French went to prevent the Maltese magisterial inquiry from getting access to crucial information. The Balzan house that served as a base for the French agents was stripped of all its equip- ment by the time court experts and the police vis- ited the place on the even- ing of the plane crash. Images of Libyan terri- tory taken by the aircraft were relayed to a control room in the ordinary- looking house, close to the Infetti football ground. The magistrate leading the inquiry is understood to have collected testimo- ny describing how agents at the house processed "live footage" from the aircraft. Five French agents died when the aircraft they were on, a Fairchild Mer- lin, crashed in Safi shortly after taking off from Gudja airport two years ago. But mystery has shroud- ed the case. An air ac- cident report released by the French authorities last week blamed the accident on lack of maintenance on the aircraft's modifi- cations. But the police have ex- pressed their disapproval at the French report's conclusions. The new information contradicts the Maltese government's official statement at the time of the crash that the five men were operating sur- veillance missions for the French customs depart- ment. PAGES 2-3 EXCLUSIVE REPORT French secret service took evidence from Maltese inquiry KONRAD Mizzi and Keith Schembri's positions are clearly untenable; partly be- cause there is now evidence that they at least intended to commit corrupt acts, and partly also because of their own, consistent denial of facts which are now openly visible. They must be inves- tigated.
