GZIRA Utd made it through
to the fourth round of the FA
Trophy yesterday after beat-
ing Rabat Ajax 4-0 at the Cen-
tenary Stadium. Despite an
unremarkable performance,
Gzira definitely played bet-
ter than Rabat and will not
be awaiting news of whether
they will be playing Siggiewi
or Melita in the next round.
This was Gzira's first outing
in the FA Trophy. Rabat Ajax,
on the other hand, beat Luqa
S.A. 5-0 in the second round.
Gzira's first goal came on
the 37th minute, when Juan
Carlos Corbalan controlled
the ball he received, dribbled
past a defender and sent the
ball past the goalkeeper.
On a freekick for Gzira
on the 45th minute, Briffa
passed the ball to Veronese
who sent a deep cross into
the Ajax penalty area. The
cross passed over the keeper
but the defenders managed to
clear to safety.
21 minutes into the second
half, Corbalan received an-
other pass from Cohen and
sent the ball careening on a
low trajectory past Zammit,
the Rabat keeper, to make the
score 2-0.
On the 79th minute, Gzira
scored again, this time from
an Andrew Cohen freekick
from outside the penalty area.
Then, three minutes later,
Cohen sent a low ball into
the penalty area, causing Ra-
bat defender Tanti to nearly
score an own goal. The ball
hit the upright post and was
then calmly directed into the
net by Zachary Scerri.
