GRTU CEO Abigail Mamo said the Chamber had held a positive meeting with Energy Minister Joe Mizzi yesterday and would be presenting the proposal for members' approval. Mamo described the proposal as a posi- tive one which would not affect consum- ers. Earlier this month, the Chamber threat- ened industrial action by petrol stations owing to a lack of progress to provide some €21 million in government funds for petrol pump upgrades. A GRTU study conducted in 2014 had found that 80 out of 90 petrol stations in Malta and Gozo need to change all their equipment, from the petrol pumps, to pip- ing and the underground storage tanks in order to bring them in line with an EU di- rective. The EU directive says that changes are to be made by 2020, and GRTU's study back in 2014 found that a total of €21 million will cover the costs for this to happen. TWO people have been seriously injured in an accident at a fireworks factory in Wied Qierda in Haz-Zeb- bug, the police have confirmed. In a statement yesterday evening the police said that two men – a 58-year-old man and a 26-year-old, both from Haz-Zebbug – were in- jured after a fire developed while they were burning material close to a fireworks factory in the vicinity. At least two ambulances were dis- patched to the scene to take the two individuals to Mater Dei for treat- ment. A fire engine, and the Armed Forc- es of Malta's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was also at the site of incident. A magisterial inquiry is ongoing. THE NGO rescue vessel Sea-Watch 3 remains stranded some 1.4 miles from the port of Syracuse as Italian authorities continue to refuse to al- low disembarkation of the ship's passengers. Sea Watch said that without a safe port for the "exhausted shipwrecked" migrants, the Sea-Watch 3 on Thurs- day sought shelter to the east of the Sicilian coast. "Seven days after the rescue of 47 shipwrecked migrants off the Libyan coast, the last remaining rescue ship in the Mediterranean Sea now is blocked off the coast of Sicily despite various cities offering a port of safety," the NGO said. It said that on Thursday, the mayor of the Italian city of Syracuse, Franc- esco Italia, declared the city's port open to the vessel. It said that, collab- orating with local civil society, Italia had asked the responsible authorities to allow the entry of the Sea-Watch 3. Despite this it said that the Italian government, "whose minister of inte- rior is already under investigation for kidnapping, abuse of office and break- ing the SAR convention in a similar case, currently prohibits the people from leaving the ship". It said that after receiving the invita- tion from the mayor, the ship's captain asked for permission to enter the port. "However once in proximity to the port, Sea-Watch got assigned a berth instead of a safe port which could al- low the landing of shipwrecked peo- ple on board." In addition to 13 minors, the vessel was also carrying 34 other people who had experienced "long periods of ar- bitrary detention in Libyan prisons in which they have suffered daily torture, abuse, physical and psychological vio- lence". Two injured in Zebbug fire Sea-Watch stranded outside Syracuse
