8 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 JANUARY 2019 DEVELOPERS have pre- sented plans for a nine- storey high, four-star hotel along the Pietà seafront on a property which includes the 200-year-old Zamittello gardens. This represents a second attempt to redevelop the site, after an earlier applica- tion to develop a home for the elderly was withdrawn. The application also pre- sented by Landgate Ltd was met by more than 50 objec- tions presented by Pietà res- idents. The objectors included the Friends of Villa Frère who had called on the Superin- tendent for Cultural Herit- age to issue a conservation order to protect the garden, which they fear would also compromise the adjoining Villa Frère. In the new application, an existing tower, a domed exe- dra and the main parts of the elevated walkway located in the Villa Ciantar garden, will be "retained and restored". But plans foresee the exca- vation of a substantial part of the garden to make way for a spa and gym and an overlying external pool area. The project also includes an underground multi-level carpark, a cafeteria and res- taurant, a business centre, a spa and a gym. The late 18th century gar- den once belonged to Gi- useppe Nicola Zammit, a man of letters and a judge who served in official posts under the Order of St John and the British. Knighted in 1818, he was appointed in various prominent positions by governor Thomas Mait- land. Upon his death Maitland also commissioned a grand monument commemorat- ing Zammit, which is found in the Upper Barrakka Gar- dens. Instantly, this stereotype of mischief becomes an outcast in- side the regimented classroom culture, and hardly a fit for the mainstream education system. But without the right kind of social support, children like Ga- briel are facing alienation from society without being given a chance to excel themselves in an educational pathway that can give them a future. That's why students with un- ruly behaviour today are being channelled to the Education Hub, a government institu- tion that promises a lifeline to students deemed hard to cope with. Situated on the outskirts of the Junior College, colour- ful gates and welcoming smiles greet visitors to a school that so far caters for just 16 students hailing from differing environ- ments and backgrounds. Ga- briel forms part of a newly-in- troduced cohort enrolled since the start of this academic year. Manuel Fenech, the head of school, says the Education Hub enhances these students' abili- ties to access a holistic educa- tional experience, and empower them to overcome any limita- tions they may encounter. "The circumstances which some of the students were born into, have hindered their learn- ing process, while others find it difficult in grasping scho- lastic concepts. So the school educates them in basic subjects like Math, English, Maltese and ICT. By providing for the in- dividual needs of the students, we can provide academic and emotional support which would have otherwise not been offered," he said. Fenech says students are also taught social skills. "We aim at providing the students with ba- sic social skills apart from the traditional academic syllabus, to try and create seamless inte- gration with society once they graduate from the course." So instead of the traditional schooling syllabus, children here are also given the oppor- KARL AZZOPARDI Zammitello gardens earmarked for nine-storey hotel COURT NOTICE The Registrar, Civil Courts and Tribunals notifies that the First Hall of the Civil Court ordered the sale by Judicial Auction of the following property to be held in the corridors of the Courts of Justice or in room numbered 78, nearby the Courts Archives, Level -1, Courts of Justice, Republic Street, Valletta. 05 th February 2019 11.00am 42/16 - JGL HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c (C3177) vs Tristan Developments Limited (C42116) a) Garage numbered 17, as described in the attached plan marked JBG 2 which is found at basement level which garage forms part of a complex of garages named above.
