4 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 JANUARY 2019 NEWS MATTHEW VELLA AN attempt to corral grass- roots support for Opposition leader Adrian Delia inside the Nationalist Party's village clubs and party committees bolstered his standing inside the party. But by refusing to sup- port the declaration, vari- ous committee members revealed their association with rebel MPs who have set themselves apart from Delia. Among them were Marie Claire Zammit, a member from the Birkirkara local committee who is a cousin of former Opposition leader Simon Busuttil as well as a canvasser of Beppe Fenech Adami, who objected to the declaration of support. Fenech Adami's brother Michael, a former mayor of Birkirkara, was also the only member from the PN's col- lege of local councillors who opposed the statement of support for Delia. He is also employed with the political office of Nationalist MEP David Casa, who employs Nicky Azzopardi, the vice- president of the PN's youth section MZPN. The MZPN's meeting dis- cussing the declaration was itself suspended, in a meet- ing led by president Joseph Grech – which a top party source says "is close to Simon Busuttil" – and secretary- general Emma Portelli Bon- nici, a speaker in demonstra- tions led by Occupy Justice, which remains a reference point for Nationalist voters who remain unsupportive of Delia's leadership. In Gozo, the regional com- mittee's support for the De- lia declaration had a single objector, Miriam Zammit, a canvasser for Chris Said, who lost out in his leadership bid against Adrian Delia. And in Sliema, the committee which did not support the declara- tion, Delia loyalists pointed to the influence of commit- tee vice-president Joe Vas- sallo Agius, who campaigned for Alex Perici Calascione's bid for leader in 2017. In Naxxar, the committee's support for Delia was also "resisted" by the husband of MP Claudette Buttigieg, David, sources said. In Tarx- ien, "a Jason Azzopardi can- vasser" was also said to have been the sole vote against the committee's support of the declaration. The move to garner sup- port for Delia amid allega- tions of leaked WhatsApp messages pertaining to his troubled marital life, marred by leaked court documents alleging domestic violence, was intended at challenging MPs to reveal their hidden hand. Fearne, widely tipped to be a leadership hopeful after Jo- seph Muscat's exit, organised two parties for delegates at the Villa Arrigo hall in Naxxar. In the first meeting held in Naxxar last Tuesday, just 30 individuals attended with half of them members of Fearne's own campaign team. The sec- ond meeting held on Thursday was similar in attendance. The Labour Party conference has over 650 delegates, and Fearne is on a charm offensive to glad-hand those who could one day be his electors and in- fluence paid-up members to choose their next party leader. A similar event last month was well-attended, with guests gifted a red power bank with the health ministry's name on it. This time around, Fearne gave his guests a slightly less expensive gift – a notepad with a pencil. One of the attendees told MaltaToday that the low at- tendance was also down to the view among delegates that Fearne could be overreach- ing himself. "This is a mark of ambition," the witness said. "Interestingly, I saw no party heavyweights at the reception, although two familiar faces included Maria Camilleri and Claudette Abela Baldacchino." Camilleri is a Labour stalwart, former MP and Dom Mintoff confidante, while Abela Balda- cchino is a former MEP now active in the party's women's section. MaltaToday has already pre- viously reported that Fearne held dinners with established businessmen in the construc- tion industry, in which he in- vited them to "offer" to support his ambitions under a promise of "doing things differently". One dinner guest who spoke on condition of anonymity had said Fearne was "open about his intentions, and blatant about his requests for sup- port." Fearne has even made inroads with important service provid- ers of Malta's healthcare: on 18 December he graced the Vassallo Group's annual chair- man's lunch at the Phoenicia Hotel as a "guest of honour". Vassallo Group, run by PN do- nor Nazzareno Vassallo, was recently awarded a €3 million direct order to receive elderly patients inside its Caremalta homes after being transferred out of Mount Carmel hospital. The employees were informed that they no longer needed to contribute to the fund, but the bank would con- tribute instead until the fund was liquidated in 1990. But it emerged over the years that the bank had accorded the special top-up to two employ- ees who retired in the mid- 1990s and early 2000s – even though they were not entitled to it – by the bank's top brass at the time. The information had been confirmed under oath by top bank officials in a first tri- bunal hearing instituted way back in 2005. The General Workers Union is now representing the work- ers in a second lawsuit they have instituted against the bank, arguing that the benefits of the pension scheme should be applied uniformly across the board and not arbitrarily and discriminatorily. Proceedings against the bank in the Indus- trial Tribunal had not deter- mined the issue the first time around. The applicants had asked the Tribunal to declare the bank as having applied the Consoli- dated Staff and Widows and Orphans Pension Fund in an arbitrary and discriminatory manner and liquidate the ben- efits and arrears thereof in fa- vour of the applicants. MaltaToday is informed that the claim exceeds €20 million over a period of 25 years in pension top-ups. BOV pension
