11 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 JANUARY 2019 COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENT It is a mouse of a bird! Not only is the goldcrest our smallest bird (and the smallest European bird) but it actually has – well to me at least – a bit of a mousy face, with that grey face and round beady eye. Goldcrests do not nest in Malta, they come in autumn to spend the winter, flitting among coniferous trees, especially Aleppo pines. They are not easy to be aware of, because apart from their minuscule size, they are also shy and secretive. But once spotted they are a joy to watch, especially if you catch sight of their bright yellow crown, edged black to set it off better. Gold- crests (M. bufula tal-qamar) also call frequently: nothing sten- torian, but an appropriately thin, high-pitched tzree-tzree-tzree, more or less what you would expect of a bird this small. And by small I mean seriously small: this tiny jewel weighs in at just over 5g. That's the weight of a 20c coin! We are currently looking into the reasons for food waste genera- tion across the Maltese islands and trying to come up with different ways in which we can reduce it. We have created a short survey aimed at consumers in order to help in gathering more data about food waste generation at the household level in the food supply chain. We would really appreciate your cooperation in sparing a few minutes to complete our survey. Let's fight food waste together – Thank you in advance! Beverly Saliba Executive Secretary A new thrilling musical theatre piece composed by The New Victorians commemorating the Sette Giugno centenary at Fort St Elmo, Anthony Burgess's cult classic 'A Clockwork Orange' translated and re-invented for a contemporary teenage audience, and an outdoor stage adaptation of the best-selling novel 'Pope Joan' at the Mdina Ditch are all part of the upcoming season of work by the National Theatre Company of Malta. Teatru Malta launched their 2019 programme at City Lights Cinema in Valletta with a jam- packed calendar of events boasting a number of exciting projects. Teatru Malta was es- tablished in 2017 as a National Theatre company. Teatru Malta's aim, much as was successfully proven last year, was to break ties with insularity when it comes to theatre and move towards building a theatre ecosystem that has no walls, no artistic limitations and no struc- tural boundaries. "It is thanks to such pro- grammes that we ensure to up- hold our cultural strategy, to keep on making culture and the arts more accessible to the com- munity, in their various forms," said Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici during the launch. "Teatru Malta will in fact be travelling to venues across both Malta and Gozo, making sure to bring theatre to audi- ences all over the islands. The programme will also include the involvement of a variety of local theatre practitioners and international artists, further enriching its quality and sus- taining its overall diversity. The programme also includes tour- ing street circus performances, monologue masterclasses, and a festival for children. The next upcoming project is the chil- dren's opera based on Clare Azzopardi's award-winning children's book 'Il-Qtates ta' max-Xatt' directed by Denise Mulholland," he said. Artistic Director Sean Buha- giar said that 2018 was a success- ful learning curve. "In 2019 we aim to be better in more ways than one. This year I could afford to be even bolder in my choices, because of the ethos of Teatru Malta. Our team is growing and so are our audienc- es. At this point in our journey, the priority remains audience development. Many of our sto- ries are set in the past, but we're building the audiences of the fu- ture," he said. "If you're new to the magic of theatre or a recovering theatre addict, if you're eight years old or a kartanzjan holder, if you fancy comedy or prefer drama, if you like large-scale shows or prefer intimacy – we have something for you to enjoy. So, while most of these events may seem a long way off, mark your diaries, 'Like' our pages, visit our websites and let's all enjoy the work of our tireless artists together." Executive Chair of Arts Coun- cil Malta Albert Marshall said that Teatru Malta opens up a space for innovative and bold experimentation, employs the theatrical expression in order to facilitate public debate, launches topical and relevant social com- mentary, creates new audiences, pushes theatre to the limits and works closely with the commu- nities – in a few words, it thinks, creates and acts 'outside the box', and looks towards celebrat- ing inclusivity, diversity and dif- ference. Teatru Malta also has a num- ber of opportunities lined up for this year with initiatives like the Spazji Teatrali collabora- tion project which aims to sus- tain functional theatre spaces in Malta. The programme sees the sec- ond year of the Proġett Klassiċi, an initiative aimed at expanding the publication and performance of well-known classics translat- ed to Maltese. For 2019 Teatru Malta will be producing Eugène Ionesco's 'Rinoċeronti' under the direction of Michael Fenech and published with a translation by Clare Azzopardi and Albert Gatt along with other publica- tions by Ionesco which will also be translated to Maltese. Teatru Malta will also be re- visiting a select number of hit shows from 2018 as part of their new repertoire programme!
