11 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 FEBRUARY 2019 CULTURE ENVIRONMENT In our countryside lurks a wild carnivore! If that conjures up im- ages of fearsome man-eating predators, forget it. This is Malta, and our largest land carnivore would sit up comfortably on your smartphone: meet the weasel! Despite its minuscule size, how- ever, the weasel is a fierce enough predator, and would chase down a youngish wild rabbit, though its favourite fare is of more manageable dimensions, such as mice and rats. The weasel (M. ballottra) is elusive and secretive, but people who regularly take quiet walks down terraced valleys do catch occasional glimpses of it feverishly checking out rubble walls for potential snacks. No- body knows if the weasel is native or whether it was introduced to Malta (it's apparently absent from Gozo) in antiquity. What- ever its history, this charismatic creature is today considered an integral part of our fauna and – like most of our mammals – is a protected species. It is also, by the way, the smallest carnivore in existence. Tomorrow at 2pm, the Parliamentary Standing Committee re- sponsible for the Environment and Development Planning will dis- cuss the proposed Corinthia deal. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting. Please bring your ID Card with you as it is needed to access Parliament building. WEASEL xxx POPULAR Italian singer Gianni Morandi will be performing in Mal- ta again, with a concert announced for 12 April at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali. The two-hour show is organised by Giuseppe Rapisarda Manage- ment and will feature more than 40 songs from Morandi's repertoire. These will include some of his most memorable greatest hits as well as newer songs that together will retrace a wonderful journey through time and the fundamental stages in Morandi's 60-year career. Among the most anticipated songs on the tracklist are "Occhi di ragazza", "Scende la pioggia", "La fisarmonica", "Non son degno di te", "Uno su mille", "Dobbiamo fare luce", "Una vita che ti sogno". These last two tracks are part of the 40th album "D'amore e d'autore", which Morandi dedicates to love songs and which bears the signature of great authors of Italian music, including Elisa, Ivano Fos- sati, Levante, Luciano Ligabue, Er- mal Meta, Tommaso Paradiso and Giuliano Sangiorgi. Maltese Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in order to avoid disappointment as many fans from Sicily are expected to attend the concert, facilitated by the close proximity and daily access from Pozzallo and Catania. The show starts at 9.30pm. Tick- ets are already on sale on www.tick- etline.com.mt . Gianni Morandi in concert in April PABLO Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time - and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years - the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements. Three cities play a key role in Picasso's formation: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. Young Picasso visits each and explores their influence on Picasso, focusing on specific artworks from these early years. The film thus explains how this young artist acquired his craft. Looking carefully at two key early pe- riods - the so-called Blue Period and Rose Period - the film takes us all the way to 1907 and the creation of a criti- cal painting in the history of art - Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. It was a paint- ing that shocked the art world but changed it irrevocably. Picasso was only 25 years old. Working closely with all three Picas- so Museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris this film explains how he rose to great heights. The film Young Picasso will be screened exclusively at Eden Cinemas on Tuesday 5 February at 8.15pm and on Sunday 10 February at 3pm. Young Picasso at Eden Cinemas Gianni Morandi
