maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 6 FEBRUARY 2019 20 FOOTBALL SPORTS POWERLIFTING JACQUES Scerri replaces Marko Micovic who resigned at the end of last week as first team coach Balzan were looking for a new coach since Micovic decided to step down following Balzan's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Senglea. In a statement, the club said that they are "pleased to announce that Jacques Scerri has been appointed as first team coach. Jacques holds a UEFA pro coach licence and did an excellent job in his previous coach- ing jobs at Pembroke, Tarxien Rain- bows and Hamrun Spartans". Club president, Anton Tagliaferro, added that he was pleased to secure the services of Scerri. He said: ""I welcome Jacques to the club - everyone at the club strongly believes that Jacques is the right man to take the club forward to achieve our targets for this season and beyond." Scerri will lead the team for the first time next Saturday as Balzan will face Mosta at the Hibernians stadium. Jacques Scerri appointed Balzan F.C. coach THE Malta Drug-Free Powerlifting Asso- ciation (MDFPA) will be organising its first competition of the year on 24 February. This competition will be a Full Power Team's Championship meet, where teams of three lifters will compete against each other and the team with the most points will be declared victorious and will take home the Shield for a year. Even though it is a team championship, particpants can still compete individually, without a team, as there will also be a po- dium for the best lifter of each respective weight category, and even an award for the Best Overall Lifter. This is a full power meet, which means that each lifter will have three attempts in all of the three lifts: the Squat, the Bench Press and the Deadlift. This competition will be held in Birgu's Youth Centre, in Triq Desain. Registration will start at 7am and weigh-ins will start at 7.30am. The lifting will start at 9am. All male and female lifters are encouraged to compete and set personal records on the day. Fans and spectators are welcome to sup- port the lifters for free.
