CARNIVAL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES BIANCHI
It is the start of Malta's
most colourful of festivities.
Carnival marks yet another
holiday for school-children,
and time to make merry
after the cold months of
January and February. It will
be a joyous occasion ahead
of Ash Wednesday, which
Catholics mark as the start
of the 40-day quaresima, up
until Easter Sunday.
James Bianchi captures the
colours of the spectacular
carnival floats in Floriana
ahead of the grand défilé,
having survived the
onslaught of one of Malta's
worst storms in recent years.
Amid the merry-making,
revellers can expect to see
themed carnival floats that
include important social
messages, such as the pink
flamingo below, which has
the environment minister's
name scrawled on its wing,
undoubtedly a call for
better animal welfare and
protection of protected
species in Malta.
