14 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 6 MARCH 2019 CULTURE CULTURE GONE are the days when people from the Neolithic were simply considered as being set in their 'primitive' ways. Indeed, several discoveries have shown that mil- lenia ago, the inhabitants of these islands were innovative thinkers that time and time again found new and better ways of doing things. The monumental megalithic temples of the Maltese Islands are a supreme ex- ample of their remarkable competences. On Sunday 10 March, Heritage Malta is inviting the public to an Open Day at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Temples which will include several interesting activities. At 9.30am, children from ages 5 to 10, can make their own clay pots the Neo- lithic way. This activity will be repeated at 1.30pm. At 10.00am, a curator from Heritage Malta will give a tour of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra in English. Meeting point at Ħaġar Qim Gate. At 10.30am, children from ages 8 to 12, can prepare flatbread – a snack made with ingredients that were available at the time. At noon, osteologist and archaeologist, Bernadette Mercieca Spiteri, will give the lecture 'Travelling back in time with the Neolithic people' during which she will reveal intriguing details about the cur- rent research which is being done on the ancient human bones that were discov- ered at the Xagħra Circle in Gozo. During this event, the public can ex- plore the temples, as well as the interac- tive visitor centre located close by. Open- ing hours are from 9am to 5pm, with last admission at 4.30pm.
