24 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 13 MARCH 2019 LAUR A CALLEJA WINTER is not over yet with strong winds and some show- ers making a return after last week's warm spell, according to Malta International Air- port's Meteorological Office. The windy and cloudy weather of yesterday is set to carry on further into the week with winds expected to reach Force 7 on Friday. The coming days' weather will not quite resemble the disaster that the island faced just under two weeks ago, in the worst storm to hit Malta since 1982. The storm saw trees uprooted, electrical poles and traffic signs bent and broken and left farmers fearing for their livelihoods. Yesterday marked the return of windy weather, with Force 8 north and north-westerly winds with temperatures that felt like 12°C, a considerable drop from Monday's high of 18°C. Farmer, Joe Galea told the MaltaToday that he was con- cerned about the damage the strong winds this week will have on his crops. "We just have to wait it out and see how much damage is done when it's over, there isn't anything else that can be done," Galea said in a resigned tone. He said that while he did not expect the damages to be as bad as the previous storm, Galea still predicted damages to his crops. The Met Office said winds ranging between Force 5 and 6 will persist today and to- morrow. The temperature is expected to be 16°C on both days but might feel colder due to the strong winds. The temperature is expected to drop to a low of 10°C during the evenings and even further to 8°C later on in the night. Friday will not only bring Force 7 north-westerly winds but isolated showers. How- ever, it will also bring reprieve with temperatures of 17°C. The weekend is expected to see a return of warmer weath- er. Saturday and Sunday will bring minimal wind with the Met Office forecasting winds blowing from North Africa and temperatures at a high of 21°C and low of 17°C.
