First profits for Air Malta in 16 years Call me by my name... traditional names stand the test of PAGES 14-15 As Maltese fertility drops, record high of children born to foreign parents in 2017 PAGE 7 MATTHEW VELLA TOURISM minister Konrad Mizzi is expected to add a new feather in his cap, when national airline Air Malta reveals a tiny operational profit for 2018, the first in 17 years. Sources said the airline had man- aged to climb slightly into the black with a €200,000 operational profit, although the figure could be lower due to other receivables. But it will be seen as a coup for the Labour minister, who was recently buoyed by a MaltaToday survey sug- gesting he is the second most pre- ferred Cabinet minister by Labour respondents. He is now said to be exploring a possible bid for the party leadership should Joseph Muscat re- sign at the end of his second tenure. Although the operational profit will be further chipped away by extraor- dinary items, the airline will be post- ing an increase in overall revenues after having opened new routes. Air Malta's planes are also f lying for more hours, an important factor since previous administrations had trouble in convincing the airline un- ion to f ly for longer. This has enabled the airline to spread its fixed costs across more f lights. National airline will announce small operational profi t as result of growth strategy employed after 2017 PAGE 2 MATTHEW VELLA THE magistrate Yana Micallef Sta- frace will not be promoted to judge, after the judicial appointments committee deemed her tenure as magistrate was too short to merit promotion. Micallef Stafrace, 57, was appoint- ed magistrate in 2017 but since then has been recommended for promo- tion to judge by the Prime Minister. The judicial appointments com- mittee is charged with examining requests by the Prime Minister for the promotion of magistrates to the superior courts. Micallef Stafrace was one of two magistrates recommended for pro- motion, the other being Francesco Depasquale, 49, who was appointed magistrate in 2011 and assigned all libel and defamation cases. "She was not turned down, but the com- mittee felt not enough time had elapsed in her role as magistrate to merit promotion to the superior court," a source said. Committee stops magistrate's promotion court," a source said.
