12 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 27 MARCH 2019 CULĊTURE CULTURE NATURE THIS Saturday, Heritage Mal- ta is hosting the children's workshop 'Planting Story Seeds' at the National Mu- seum of Natural History in Mdina. This workshop is a unique opportunity to meet the sto- rytellers, hear the stories and pick up some storytelling techniques. The workshop is part of a long-term collaboration be- tween five European countries for the project 'Here Where I Belong', funded by FEST and Creative Europe. In the old days, stories were used to share values and wis- dom from one generation to another. They allowed the young and the elderly to come together, so that the young could draw upon the wisdom of the old, while the old could lean upon the strength of the young. Today, many people give lit- tle thought about how their lives are shaped by the stories of the places and the people who lived there before them. During this workshop, five storytellers from Malta, Nor- way, Italy, Slovenia and Hun- gary are coming together to rewrite old fairy tales making them more relevant to today. The stories will focus on na- ture and will explore narra- tives about the natural land- scapes of Europe which are an important part of our cultural heritage. This event is aimed at chil- dren between the ages of 5 and 12. Children must present their Heritage Malta Passport in order to attend. Attendance is free, however, booking is re- quired. Only 20 children, each with one accompanying adult, can attend this workshop. Participation will be on first- come-first-served basis. The workshop will start at 1.30pm and run till 3.30pm. Time: 1.30pm – 3.30pm Please email info@ligninsto- ries.com for more informa- tion and booking details. Nature walk on Comino Mass on the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day LAST Thursday, on the occasion of World Syn- drome Day, the Malta Down Syndrome Asso- ciation held a Mass for its members and friends at the Dar tal-Providen- za chapel in Siġġiewi. Also present were the Parliamentary Secre- tary for the Rights of Persons with Disability, Anthony Agius Decelis and the president of the Association, Joeanne Xerri. Fr Martin Micallef, Director of Id-Dar tal- Providenza, celebrated Mass. In his homily he stressed that everyone has to be part of a soci- ety that looks at diver- sity not as a threat but as a treasure: A society that doesn't look at the person with disability with the medical model in that it sees the person with disability as a prob- lem but with the social model, in which society accepts that it creates the disability problem when it does not adapt to the needs, expecta- tions and aspirations of these persons. The Malta Down Syndrome Association offers support to par- ents of children who are born with this con- dition and works for more awareness so that persons with this intel- lectual condition can achieve their potential.
