13 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 27 MARCH 2019 MUSIC THE 'voice' of Freddie Mer- cury is coming to Malta in June. Canadian born artist and musician Marc Martel, will be performing Queen's greatest hits in the second edition of 'Rock the Fort', or- ganised by TEN08 on Friday, 14 June. Martel will captivate the crowds with such render- ings of the iconic 'Bohemian Rhapsody', the adrenaline- pumping 'We Will Rock You', the euphoric 'We Are the Champions' and the soulful 'Somebody to Love'. The rock concert is being held at the Grand Harbour Marina, Vittoriosa, in the shadow of Malta's most im- posing fortification, Fort St Angelo. The event is once again be- ing organised in aid of The Marigold Foundation. This year's concert promises to be a memorable one. Through genetics and mu- sical aptitude, the 42-year- old singer is a vocal dop- pelgänger for the Queen frontman. That is a gift that has led Martel, formerly the leader of the Christian band 'Down- here' in Canada, to a second career in recent years. Mar- tel admits that it's not the life that he planned, but it has landed him on 'American Idol' and in front of crowds of thousands worldwide. Described by Queen's of- ficial drummer Roger Tay- lor as "that voice … you lis- ten, close your eyes and you think it's Freddie", Martel has excellent worldwide re- views from artists in the mu- sic industry. In August 2017 he en- thralled Celine Dion in a ren- dition of 'Somebody to Love'. The video on YouTube got more than six million views. Early bird tickets are available now from www. s h o w s h a p p e n i n g . c o m / r t f / marcmartel The 'voice' of Freddie Mercury is coming to Malta MARK, Stefan, Roderick and Gabrijel formed SterjoTipi only a year and a half ago but don't let that fool you. Their debut release 'Belti' became an instant hit and the follow up of 'Tabib' continued to build on that success with both tracks being on the local PRS chart and videos gathering over 30k views on YouTube. Their fun vibe, catchy melodies and Maltese lyrics have them on the right path to becoming a household name on our shores. Their latest release 'Ħajja ta' Xejn' has just been released and listeners will see the band in a dif- ferent light. The track has a more mature melody and the lyrics are about the fact that no matter how hard life can get, we are here for a reason and the life we live means something and has a purpose. Featuring on the single are also singers from the VocaChoir which added a beautiful harmo- ny to the song. SterjoTipi are working hard to release more material throughout this year and always try to make songs performed in Maltese as current as can be. For more info on SterjoTipi, their gigs and up- dates make sure to follow them on all social me- dia platforms. 'Hajja ta' xejn' - Sterjotipi's single release THE Medina Foundation for Music will be presenting 'Ange- lus', a recital of sacred and clas- sical works, on Friday, 5 April at the Mdina Metropolitan Cathe- dral, at 7.30 pm with the partic- ipation of the S. Paul Chamber Ensemble, the Anacrusis Con- cert Choir and soloists Karen Gatt Darmenia soprano, mezzo soprano Claire Massa, tenor Jo- seph Aquilina and bass James Vella Bondin. Established in 2015, under the direction of Mro Mark Agius, the St Paul Chamber Ensemble has, in a relatively short time, established itself as one Malta's foremost musical institutions, bringing together some of the island's finest musicians and singers. Over the past three years, the orchestra has gone from strength to strength, with each performance being a commit- ment towards attaining ever higher standards, presenting prestigious performances of technically demanding works such as Mro Joseph Sammut's Canticles of St Luke and Mro Agius's Messa da Requiem at St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta. The latter work of Mro Agius was also performed during a concert tour in Poland and was highly commended. Recently, the orchestra also performed a Royal Command Performance under the distinguished patron- age of their Imperial and Royal Highnesses Prince Sandor and Princess Herta Margarete Hab- sburg Lothringen. Currently with a complement of 45 musicians and its singers, the St Paul Chamber Ensemble has regularly collaborated with charitable institutions including Dar Bjorn and the Ghana Mis- sion Foundation. This performance is being organised in aid of Id-Dar tal- Providenza and entrance is against a donation of €10. Seats can be booked on 2145 4697 or 7995 0507.
