Admirals of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John – Michael Galea The Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem was, from its very beginnings, a Hospitaller Order. It was founded in Jerusalem in the mid-11th century to provide shelter to the Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land. Driven out of the Holy Land by the Infi dels, the Order moved to Cyprus (1291), then to Rhodes (1310) and later to Malta (1530). Living on an island over a span of more than half a millennium the Order had, out of sheer necessity, built a formidable fl eet as it was continuously living under the threat of the Ottoman Porte. Whilst the main object of the Order was the running and the organisation of the Hospital, the feats and the achievements of the navy constituted the Order's prestige on the high seas. How Was It For You? Women, Sex, Love and Power in the 1960s – Virginia Nicholson We tend to think of the 60s as a decade sprinkled with stardust: a time of space travel and utopian dreams, but above all of sexual abandonment. When the pill was introduced on the NHS in 1961 it seemed, for the fi rst time, that women – like men – could try without buying. Here are the voices from the battleground. Meet dollybird Mavis, debutante Kristina, Beryl who sang with the Beatles, bunny girl Patsy, Christian student Anthea, industrial campaigner Mary and countercultural Caroline. From Carnaby Street to Merseyside, from mods to rockers, from white gloves to Black is Beautiful, their stories throw an unsparing spotlight on morals, four-letter words, faith, drugs, race, bomb culture and sex. We, The Survivors – Tash Aw Ah Hock is an ordinary, uneducated man born in a Malaysian fi shing village and now trying to make his way in a country that promises riches and security to everyone, but delivers them only to a chosen few. With Asian society changing around him, like many he remains trapped in a world of poorly-paid jobs that just about allow him to keep his head above water but ultimately lead him to murder a migrant worker from Bangladesh.
