Rouge Coco Flash THE iBreastExam (iBE) device do- nated recently by a Malta-based NGO is enabling a charity in India to provide free breast cancer screen- ing in remote villages in Wardha District where currently only 6% of underprivileged Indian women know about breast cancer and less still have access to screening. With 2,000 cases detected every day in India, this device is instrumental in saving lives. As part of its 45th anniversary ac- tivities as the owner of Castello Lan- zun in Mensija, San Gwann in May last year, the Grand Commandery of the Castello (GCC) launched a crowd-funding appeal among its membership. In a span of two months, this ju- risdiction – which forms part of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem established in AD 1073 – collected enough funds to purchase and donate the first iBE device together with 2,000 cartridg- es to Women In Need (WIN), a UK Charity operating in Nagpur, India During a visit held this month, the jurisdiction's Hospitaller Chev Paul Warren visited two of the villages targeted by WIN where they have been carrying out scans with the iBreastExam. "So far, the device has done over 1,000 scans," said Paul Warren, "with 36 cases referred for further examination. Of these, six cases of breast cancer were diag- nosed." For the past eight years, WIN has been the recipient of support from the Grand Commandery of the Cas- tello. Donations raised have gone towards a mobile primary health clinic in Nagpur's urban slums; a small hospice for elderly leprosy pa- tients at Dattapur; beds and equip- ment for abandoned women shel- tered by WIN; an auto-rickshaw for the Hospice; the creation of a gar- den for abandoned women; as well as capital equipment such as com- puter, projector, screen, water filter and office furniture. This was stated by Malta BNI's national director Da- vid Bullock at the sixth an- nual awards and networking dinner organised by Malta BNI to celebrate its seven years in Malta. Today, BNI has more than 9,000 Chap- ters with more than 250,000 member companies. BNI can help Maltese companies grow their business interna- tionally and, in turn, further develop society's well-being and prosperity," said Bull- ock. Echoing words of Ivan Misner, who founded BNI (www.bni.com) in Califor- nia over 30 years ago, Bull- ock urged members to set even higher expectations. "In these seven years, I have come to appreciate the de- termination, resilience and exceptional quality of our members in Malta." He congratulated the members, and particularly those receiving awards, for what had been achieved in establishing BNI in Malta by adopting BNI's philoso- phy of 'Givers Gain' through effective business network- ing. The Minister for Educa- tion and Employment Evar- ist Bartolo, who presented the awards during this edition, said: "As Govern- ment, we welcome organi- sations, such as Malta BNI, which trains and develops its members as professional business people.
