maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 3 APRIL 2019 21 SPORTS MOTOCROSS THE Gozo Motorcross Association or- ganised a two-day intensive programme of training at Ta Xhajma Motocross Track, in collaboration with Banda Mx, a Ukranian group with MXGP Academy which is affiliated with the International Federation of Motorcycles, FIM. Nenad Maxim and Dimtry Asmanov, both professional riders, were responsi- ble for the implimentation of the classes. They are both European champions. Asmanov, in particular, who is a 22 year old University student, studying engi- neering in Kiev, has won the European championship three times. They are both masters of sports and their knowledge and technique were evi- dent in their ways of tutoring our riders. The training on Saturday lasted six whole hours, starting at 10am with an intensive physical examination, car- dio-respiratory and metabolic condi- tioning and balance. Then on Sunday training continued with motocross practice on the track using the riders' motorbikes. Maxim explained that motocross is one of the toughest disciplines there is and riders need to be very fit. The sport re- quires strength and endurance in equal measure for a rider to be able to make it to the chequered flag. He could never stress enough the importance of physical training and good nutrition. Riders were very satisfied with the qual- ity of the classes. As one rider comment- ed, " It seems that after listening and watching Dimtry, I know nothing about how to handle my motorbike properly on the track" At the end of Day 2, GMXP certifi- cates were awarded to the successful candidates. Mr Frank Xuereb, presi- dent of GMA, awarded custom-made plaques to both trainers and thanked them for their dedication and profes- sionalism. Both parties agreed that there will be more collaborative activi- ties and teamwork between Ukraine and Gozo in future.
