14 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 10 APRIL 2019 CULĊTURE CULTURE THIS past weekend, the tour- ing production Ilħna Mitlufa – 'Lost Voices' – performed at Sala Scicluna in Torino, its very first international stage in collaboration with LabPerm di Castaldo. The hall, dedicated to the late Maltese-Italian theatre icon Pino Scicluna was inaugurated just last year, and is a testament to the career and love Scicluna had for his craft, a love that lives on through the dedication of his wife Katia Capato who runs the establishment today, as a promise made to him many years ago. Ilhna Mitlufa falls under what Sala Scicluna are calling their "Malta Project", whereby a se- ries of Maltese productions will be put up at the hall throughout their programme of upcoming events. Ilħna Mitlufa is the first and also marks the beginning of a relationship between Malta and Torino. Ilħna Mitlufa's per- formances in Torino was also a prelude to a series of anticipat- ed tours in Malta and overseas throughout the rest of the year, the next being in Gozo's iconic Teatru Astra on 5 May. The one-time-only mati- nee show will be performed in Maltese but will be subti- tled throughout and promises to move audience goers of all backgrounds; foreign and local, young and old. This really is a production that strikes a nostalgic chord with everyone through the medium of Għana, something Andrew Alamango, the muscial director behind the concept, has researched for many years. The show narrates the heritage of an age old story, woven by singers past and present, told in poetry – spoken, written and recorded. The 'għannej' is the poet, the keeper of memory, the story- teller and comic entertainer, singing on our behalf and for those whose voices have been lost, renewing an unbroken tra- dition; the marriage of the past and present through song. Mariele Zammit and An- drew Alamango together with dramaturge Domenico Cast- aldo have been rehearsing for the past three months in antici- pation of their premiere show outside Maltese shores.
