A Professor of Medi- cine and Metabolism at New- castle University and Honorary Consultant at Newcastle Hos- pitals NHS Trust, Roy Taylor qualified in medicine at the University of Edinburgh. LifeCycle – R.U.S.H. (Renal Unit Support Health Hub), as part of its commitment to sup- port renal patients and per- sons at risk of kidney failure is organising a series of talks on healthy lifestyle. Diabetes is a precursor for kidney failure. Helping diabet- ics to control or even reverse type 2 diabetes will contribute towards the prevention of kid- ney failure. Entrance is against a dona- tion of €50 per person and €75 for pensioner couple. All pro- ceeds will go towards Nescafé 3in1 LifeCycle Challenge 2019. Taylor has been conduct- ing research on type 2 diabe- tes since 1978, and has used a wide range of methods to un- derstand the condition. He se- quentially studied human adi- pose tissue, fibroblasts, muscle and then liver and whole body. He worked with Professor Gerald Shulman at Yale in 1990-91, and laid the basis for subsequent research. In 2006, he created the Newcastle Mag- netic Resonance Centre and has focussed on developing techniques to elucidate how food is handled by the body in health and disease. Recently, he has demonstrat- ed that type 2 diabetes can be reversed to normal by de- creasing liver and pancreas fat content, throwing light on the aetiology of a condition previ- ously regarded as complex and heterogenous. Supported by Nestlé Health Science Malta, the talks "Put- ting Type 2 Diabetes into Re- mission" are open to the pub- lic and will be held on Friday, 3 May at 5.30pm and on Sat- urday 4 May at 9.30am at Hill- top Gardens, Naxxar. LifeCycle-R.U.S.H. presents talk on Type 2 diabetes by Prof Roy Taylor EARLIER this week, GO launched GO Ventures, a €2 million Tech Startup Fund at Valletta Contemporary in the presence of the Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Schembri and other stakeholders in the Mal- tese innovation and tech start- up ecosystem. "Although we have a very strong telecommunications and IT infrastructure, we also realise that one of the ways for us to continue driving innova- tion is to partner with dynamic entrepreneurs in the digital domain," GO CEO Nikhil Pa- til said. "We also want to be among the first corporates to join the budding community of angel investors in Malta. This is what spurred the idea of investing in local and inter- national startups." GO announced plans to launch it's €2million Tech Startup Fund during last Octo- ber's Delta Summit. These past months have been dedicated towards setting up the govern- ance and logistical structures for the Fund, establishing con- nections and meeting potential candidates to understand their expectations better and how GO can assist them. Stefan Briffa, who is lead- ing the GO Ventures project, gave a high-level overview of how the Tech Startup Fund will work. He explained that the GO Ventures investment package being made available includes cash, spacious co- working space in B'Kara, GO's full suite of telecom and cloud services, access to markets and networks and mentoring. "Today, Malta offers many services to startups, however they face a common problem in finding enough local sourc- es of financing and invest- ment. The 'GO Ventures' Tech Startup Fund will help address this challenge and by working with like-minded partners, GO wants to help foster a Maltese ecosystem of investment in in- novation," Patil said. Schembri said, "As a govern- ment we shall continue with this drive to empower our nation through all relevant aspects, enhancing our peo- ple's intrinsic appetite for in- novation, which as we have discerned thus far, if encour- aged and fully supported, will further contribute to Malta's unique competitive advantage. The €2million Go Ventures Start-up Tech Fund will serve as a springboard for start-up companies that are still identi- fying ways to implement their digital projects related to new emergent technologies." "In our drive to be at the forefront of this digital revolu- tion, it is also essential that the private sector becomes a pro- tagonist in attracting both for- eign talent to support techno- logical development, as well as help nurture and retain home- grown talent. ''I augur GO for their for- ward-thinking stance that is setting a new benchmark of how Maltese companies can be direct participants in, and ben- efit from new technology ini- tiatives. I look forward to see- ing start-ups benefit from this start-up tech fund which will in return contribute to Malta's thriving digital economy" he said. €2 million GO Ventures fund for tech startups HORSE owners participating in the final of this year's BOV Tazza l-Kbira drew the starting numbers for their horses during a press conference held at the Malta Racing Club. The 12 finalists were determined from 72 top category trotters in Malta following a series of heats and two semi finals. The BOV Tazza l-Kbira is the most prestigious race in the lo- cal horse racing calendar and to keep with tradition it is raced at the 2640m distance. The prestige of this historic race goes beyond the fact that it has the biggest prize pot of all the Malta Racing Club races. Edwin Borg, Chairman of the Malta Racing Club together with Charles Azzopardi Executive PR and Mar- keting at Bank of Valletta assisted the drawing of the starting numbers which was done by the owners them- selves. The MRC chairman acknowledged the importance of this draw stating that this sometimes determined one's chances especially if a horse is ada- mant on going to the front or does not like being boxed in. Whilst anyone of the 12 horses can be the winner, the sure thing is that this year it will be a new horse that will put its name on the prestigious trophy. The passion shown by the owners, drivers and all those involved in this sporting discipline is exemplary and we are glad to again be supporting this prestigious event said Mr Azzopardi. Sports is an integral part of Bank of Valletta's active participation in the community in which we operate and we take the opportunity to wish all the participants all the best for the final of the BOV Tazza l-Kbira. The final of the BOV Tazza l-Kbira is being held today and as usual a special entertainment programme has been- prepared. The horse parade will be led by last year's winner Urgah du Rib.
