The Legendary orchestra of the State Capella in St Peters- burg is returning to Malta for two concerts of symphonic music. On Saturday the 15th June world famous soloists Ju- lian Milkis and Haik Kazazian shall join the Capella under the direction of its principal con- ductor and artistic director, the famous Alexander Cher- nushenko for a programme of light classics. Tchaikovsky, Rimsky Korsakov, Shor and the Gilliland Jazz concerto are sure to arouse the interest of countless music lovers. Tchaikovsy and Rimsky Kor- sakov have done much to popu- larise Russian music in the west. Both have a unique Russian flavour while simultaneously forming part of the western tra- dition of great composers. Shor and Gilliland are gaining popu- larity lately. They are compos- ers who bridge the gap between the world of classical music with that of the more popular kind. On Sunday 16 June the Capel- la orchestra shall be playing the music of one of the great composers of the 19th Century. Without a doubt, after Wagner, Brahms is the greatest com- poser of the middle of the 19th century. The genius who gave new life to all the important genres of the 19 century except opera prolonged the life of the organ repertoire, chamber mu- sic , the lieder and above all the concerto and symphony. Two world class soloists, Al- exandr Rudin who is professor of cello and chamber Music at the Moscow state conservatoire and Vladimir Pogoretskiy who is the concertmaster of the capella, shall be joined by the Capella or- chestra under the direction of Alexei Galea Cavallazzi for the great Concerto for Cello and violin. Galea Cavallazzi is the most internationally respected Maltese conductor. The evening shall be rounded off by the 3rd symphony. Concert ticket price is 10 eu- ros, with patrons attending both concerts paying only 15 euros. More information on www.mcc.com.mt and for tick- ets call on 2559 5750. Concert of symphonic music with the St Petersburg Capella Symphony Orchestra Maestro Alexei Galea Cavallazzi THE current season is coming to an end, but before going into summer mode Teatru Manoel offers its audience three very different, but very high level concerts with top local and internation- al musicians. The first in line is an evening with string quartets by Quator Arod, one of France's leading ensembles. This young ensemble started in 2013 and consists of Jordan Victoria (violin), Alexandre Vu (violin), Tanguy Parisot (viola) and Samy Rachid (cello). Quatuor Arod won several prestigious music prizes and sees itself perform on famous inter- national stages already. The quartet will bring an exciting combination of well known string quartets by Joseph Haydn, Béla Bartók and Johannes Brahms. The concert takes place on 22 May at 8 pm. On 3 June, at 8pm the audience is invit- ed to 'An Evening with Mozart'. For this concert pianist Joanne Camilleri teams up with the Cordia String Quartet fea- turing David Lang (violin), Emese Toth (violin), Jacob Portelli (viola) and Frank Camilleri (cello). On the programme two of Mozart's famous piano concer- tos, complemented with his string quar- tet in F. This concert will take you back to Mozart's time in Vienna. It is prom- ised to be a delightful evening in good company. Not to be missed for sure. For the closing of the season Teatru Manoel works together with the Ital- ian Cultural Institute and brings us already in a lazy Summer Jazzy mood. The evening will feature Doctor 3, a very well known and much appreciated Italian jazz ensemble. They have a very specific stylistic hallmark that knows to please all audiences. For this concert they combine music from Mancini, Berlin, Cohen and Lenon & McCartney among others. In short the perfect way to start the Summer.
