13 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 12 MAY 2019 CULTURE ENVIRONMENT One of the many kinds of birds of prey that migrate over Malta in spring is a pale grey ghost-like raptor known as the Montagu's harrier. Though spotted by birdwatchers every year, it is nowhere as common as the closely related marsh harrier. For convenience, birders often group birds of prey into two categories: the so-called 'broadwings', and the falcons. On account of its wide wings, the Montagu's harrier (bagħdan griż) belongs to the broadwing group, along with buzzards, eagles and vultures. Those wide wings help the bird ride warm air currents rising from the ground – known as thermals – and soar to great heights without exerting itself in active flight. This trick is espe- cially useful when the birds are migrating, because once up there they can glide away with hardly a flap on to the next leg of their journey. It will be taking place at the main square of the quaint village of Santa Lucija in Gozo. Celebrating its 14th year, this event will feature top-notch entertainment provided by DCapitals Big Band, accompanied by DJ Mario Borg. Kicking off at 8pm, entrance will be free of charge and visitors will have the option to pur- chase a wine glass which will entitle them to un- limited samples of a selection of red, white and rose' wines from Marsovin's cellars. Food stalls will also be set up. Nestled within rural countryside that domi- nates the western side of Gozo, Santa Lucija is just a 15 minute walk from Gozo's Capital, Vic- toria, and may also be reached by bus number 313 or taxi. When the sleepy hamlet of Santa Lucija comes to life TEEN participants are being sought for a creative work- shop over two weeks in July. The project is a collabora- tion between Spazju Kreattiv and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ led by dance artists Lisa Colette By- sheim and Sarah Vella. This residency project of- fers participants aged 13 to 14 an opportunity to meet other people their age, to collaborate and create together in a fun, re- laxed environment. It will give them the possibili- ty to explore their own creative skills and learn new ones that will enrich their everyday life. The residency workshop is being held between Monday 1 July and Friday 12 July. The only requirement for participants is that they are active on social media. No dance or artistic experience is necessary. Participants will need to be enthusiastic about learning new skills and sharing their thoughts and experiences about social media. They will set off on a collabo- rative and creative journey to examine the phenomenon of 'meeting' in real life versus en- counters in the virtual world. Movement exercises, freewrit- ing, music, film, drawing, and text will be explored as forms of expression to investigate the impacts of social media. This project will end with a show- case on the final day for family and friends. Application deadline is Mon- day 10 June. Interested appli- cants are highly encouraged to submit their application form as soon as possible to avoid dis- appointment.
