Lorin Scicluna, 22, and Francesco Fenech, 21, were arrested just over a week ago after Scicluna's car was identified by the police from CCTV footage taken on the night. The two young men, both AFM soldiers, were suspend- ed from their duties following a special order by President George Vella. During today's sitting Ar- naud explained how the police had come to identify Scicluna's car from CCTV footage taken from the area. In addition to Souleymane's murder, the two men have also been charged with the attempted murder of another man who they allegedly ran over on the same road. The court also heard the testimony of Jason Green, a friend of the accused who had been in the car with them during an incident in which they destroyed a migrant's bicycle. Green said he had known Scicluna for about three years and Fenech for a few months. He said that the two both didn't like migrants because they believed that they were "taking over the country". Green recounted how they were driving through the Hal Far road when they insulted a migrant riding a bicycle. Asked why they had insult- ed the man, given that they didn't know him, Green re- plied that they did it to "pick on him". The man had chased them on his bike, before they got out of the car and confronted him. It was at this point that the man fled, and the three men destroyed his bicycle. Police officers who were dispatched to the scene of the crime described finding Souleymane's lifeless body on the ground as well as the two other men that had been shot by the accused. The case continues. Murder suspects believe migrants are 'taking over the country', friend tells court MATTHEW VELLA THE businessman Maurice Mizzi was called in for an urgent meeting with en- vironment minister José Herrera, over an anti-Muslim tirade during an interview with The Times. Mizzi, appointed 'Guardian of the Fu- ture Generations' after the resignation departure of climate change expert Mi- chael Zammit Cutajar, hit out at irregu- lar immigration into Malta, arguing that Muslims are "taking over" and insisting the country should stop migrants from entering. His comments drew an angry reaction from NGOs, who said he should be dis- missed. But the ministry has not yet decided to demand his resignation. "With reference to the declarations made by Chev. Maurice Mizzi on Sun- day's newspaper, the the Ministry for Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change is disassociating it- self with such reported statements, as it is not reflective to the government's vi- sion including that of the Guardian of the Future Generations. Minister José Herrera has requested an urgent meeting to clarify the situation." Mizzi stunned the public by claiming that wages remained low because mi- grants were happy to work for the mini- mum wage. "We should stop these people coming from abroad without a passport, with their children and with a different reli- gion… We are living in a Catholic coun- try, and when I die, I want to die in a Catholic country. At the moment, there are so many Muslims coming – they're all having nine babies, next to our two – and they will take over eventually." "I want to have Malta for the Maltese," he said. "Maybe that's an antiquated view, but I want to see it Catholic and for the Maltese. I don't mind having others, as long as they don't take over. And the problem is they have so many children." A group of NGOs and activists said the comments were racist and Mr Mizzi should be dismissed. They pointed out that Mizzi's role is to "endeavour to facilitate closer col- laboration between all stakeholders in the pursuit of the right balance between socio-economic development and envi- ronmental stewardship in the Maltese Islands". "Finding a balance between socio-eco- nomic development and environmental stewardship is achievable by fostering inclusion, and certainly not by condemn- ing difference, or singling out any par- ticular religious belief. Mr Mizzi seems to forget the responsibility that comes with his role and the essential point that the most important factor to achieve de- velopment and guarantee future genera- tions is peace," the NGOs said. "Mizzi's declaration contradicts the Prime Minister's statement about the need for more workers, irrespective of religion, origin or colour… "In the light of such racist declarations, we demand his immediate resignation or removal by the Prime Minister as his position is no longer tenable," the NGOs said. Minister calls urgent meeting with Mizzi over 'Muslim invasion' interview MATTHEW AGIUS A viral video of a man being pursued by a bystander after al- legedly stealing money from a parked car in Tal-Virtu' is ex- pected to be crucial evidence in the case against him. The suspected thief was chased down the street on Sunday in broad daylight by a resident who filmed the hooded man on a mobile phone as he walked to a waiting getaway car. This morning Valletta resident Patrick Mangion, 46, was re- manded in custody after plead- ing not guilty to aggravated theft. Mangion, wearing a hoodie, had been filmed walking briskly down the Rabat street, swearing at the person holding the mobile phone who repeatedly called him "thief." After unsuccessfully attempting to escape his pursuer on foot, Mangion was fled in a getaway car driven by a third party. Mangion was arrested after the footage went viral on social me- dia. He later released a detailed statement about the events of that Sunday morning to the po- lice. The man was arraigned in court today and denied charges of having stolen some €20 in cash from a parked car, uttered obscene words in public, in- sulted the man who had chased him after the alleged theft, as well as breached two earlier bail decrees. Defence lawyer Alfred Abela requested bail, highlighting that that the man had given himself up to the police of his own ac- cord. He alleged that Mangion had been carrying out the in- structions of third parties. Abela argued that the evidence was already preserved in the footage and that the man could be prohibited from approaching witnesses or visiting Rabat. Inspector Robert Vella, pros- ecuting, retorted that there were civilian witnesses who were yet to testify. Moreover, the accused was untrustworthy and the na- ture of the alleged crime was a serious one. Presiding Magistrate Josette Demicoli turned down the man's bail request and ordered that he be remanded in custody. Inspectors Robert Vella and Stacy Attard prosecuted. Lawyers Alfred Abela, Arthur Azzopardi and Rene Darmanin are defence counsel to Mangion. Viral video of man pursuing 'thief' pays off Chev. Maurice Mizzi
