21 COMMERCIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 2 JUNE 2019 SMARTCITY Malta will be hosting a scale model exhibi- tion this weekend – 1st and 2nd June 2019 – titled "Scale Model Island", featuring mod- els ranging from military vehi- cles to aviation, ground vehi- cles, marine vehicles, remote controlled models and others. For the first time ever, this exhibition will include exhibits from several local clubs, asso- ciations including other scale modelers which are independ- ent (non-affiliated individuals) and the best of the local talent, all under one roof. The exhibition will be at The Laguna Suite at SmartCity. The scale model exhibits were built by enthusiasts to depict particular historical moments, vehicles or other purposes. Besides having the chance to observe local talent at its best, visitors will also have the op- portunity to learn more about history, the hobby in itself as well as interact with the scale modelers themselves about their experience and method of work. The participating clubs/asso- ciations are the Hal Far Model Flying Association, the Malta Railway Foundation, SSM, Gozo Scale Modellers Club, A.M.E, Malta Model Aircraft Flying Association, Malta So- ciety of Model Makers, as well as a group of individuals which are not affiliated with any club. The exhibition will be open on Saturday 1st June from 10am to 8pm, and Sunday, 2 June 2019 from 10am to 6pm. Entrance is free of charge. The future is Your Choice with the BOV Education Loan AFTER the successful launch of the "Ġobon Tan-Nar®" range of Maltese cheeses last Octo- ber, FarmFresh Ltd, a company owned by the distinguished Magro Brothers Group in Go- zo, is extending its range to include a new cheese, "Ġobon Malti tal-Milord"! The "Ġobon Tan-Nar®" range celebrates Malta's lost herit- age in cheese-making culture, which, after years of intense research into melitensia docu- ments, up-to-date technology and best practice standards in dairy production, has been re- introduced into the Maltese market. For hundreds of years, up to the turn of the twentieth cen- tury, Malta boasted its very own cheese culture. Most towns and villages had their own "imħażen tan-nar", ware- houses specialising in cheese produced in large vats over open flames. When herdsmen had excess milk, they took the fresh milk to these warehouses to turn it into cheese, which could be kept for longer peri- ods of time. This cheese, com- monly referred to as "tan-nar", was made from a combination of two or three sources of milk, depending on the composi- tion of the herd of the farmer concerned. The technique to make the cheese was a deli- cate process, with each master craftsman having his own se- cret recipe and craft technique. This created a very competitive market among the craftsmen and herdsmen – all contesting for the best tasting cheese on the island! In those days the heat process used was in no way an easy task to perform, considering that households did not have elec- tricity or gas supply and cook- ing was still carried out over stone stoves fired with wood, or coal in the case of wealthier families. Either way, fueling a large open flame was a labori- ous task! This wide-scale cheese pro- duction process came to a sud- den halt in the early thirties of the last century when Malta was still under British rule. In a bid to curb the spread of undu- lant fever "deni rqiq", all trade dealing with fresh milk sud- denly became illegal and this brought about the immedi- ate closure of all cheese ware- houses, wiping out most of the cheese making culture that had developed so profusely over the previous centuries . With the introduction of the "Ġobon Tan-Nar®" brand, Farm Fresh reignited the passion for local cheese making and picked up where our ancestors left off. The original range introduced on the market consists of four traditionally-inspired flavours; plain, peppered, cumin and fennel and are crafted using primarily cow`s pasteurised milk mixed with goat`s milk. The latest addition to the range is the "Ġobon Malti tal- Milord", a semi-hard artisan cheese made primarily from sheep`s milk, to give a distinc- tive rich creamy taste, mixed with goat`s milk, to add a rustic aftertaste. "Tal-Milord" a cor- rupted Maltese word meaning "My Lord" was a title conferred upon noble English gentle- men by their willing staff, and has since become a common Maltese word and family nick- name.This cheese is aged for a minimum of 16 weeks. During the 19th century, this delicacy was highly sought after by the English gentry of the time, hence the name. All the cheese crafted un- der the "Tan-Nar®" range fol- low the same traditional reci- pes and methods whilst using modern technology to guaran- tee food safety to the end con- sumer.
