13 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 12 JUNE 2019 CULTURE ON Friday 21 and Saturday 22 June, Heritage Malta is once again organising guided tours of the temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra to mark the summer solstice. At sunrise on the first day of sum- mer, the sun can be seen rising in particular alignment with these sites. Although it is not known for certain whether these orientations were in- tentional, they are so systematic that this is very probable. In prehistoric agricultural societies, observation of the movement of the stars, the moon and the sun could have been related to the changing seasons and to the times of planting and harvesting crops. The public can opt to experience the summer solstice from either Mnajdra or Ħaġar Qim Temples. Following this intriguing phenomenon, par- ticipants can enjoy a guided tour of the Visitor Centre, including the 4D show, and refreshments. Tickets are priced at €25 per person and €15 for Heritage Malta members. Tickets are available from all Heritage Malta museum and sites, and online. Participants are to meet near the Ħaġar Qim Visitor Centre at 5.15am. Experience the summer solstice ON 20 and 21 June, the Embassy of Austria in Malta and Teatru Manoel will be presenting a fantastic double bill featuring the young dynamic and charismatic ensemble Trio Immer- sio from Vienna. Ambassador for Austria in Malta Andreas Stadler said "Trio Immer- sio" were the best example of the openness of Austria and Malta in dif- ficult times "when we are confronted with provincialism, nationalism and political egotism such as 'my country first'". "For Austria, we have learned from our past and we remain committed, maybe more than ever, to the arts, to a united and strong European Union, to cultural openness and curiosity, to our tradition and to young talents," he said. Founded in 2013 the trio (Vira Zhuk, violin – Maria Vardzelashvili, piano – Nemanja Stanković, cello) have won some prestigious prices and were awarded the title of New Austrian Music Ambassador for 2018/2019. The ensemble is praised for its deeply moving, imaginative and colorful dedication to the Austrian music. A style that is highly appreciated internationally and that brought the musicians already to renown inter- national venues and places such as Musikverein Wien, Wiener Konzer- thaus, Flagey Brussels, CRR Concer Salonu in Istanbul, and Cathage fes- tival among others. Violist Vira Zhuk said: "We are very excited to bring some of our ab- solute favorite pieces to Malta. We invite you on a two-evening journey through time and space from 19th century t o our days, where we will visit both historical and modern Vi- enna, with important stops in 20th century Moscow and Buenos-Aires." The first night is dedicated to the beautiful Trio Nr. 2 E-flat Major by Schubert, followed by his well- known Notturno and Shostakovich's Trio nr. 2 in E minor. During the second night the ensemble com- bines Brahms Trio nr. 1, with six heavy metal based miniatures called "Schlechtecharackterstücke" by Ber- nard Gander and The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Piazzolla.
