7 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 7 JULY 2019 CULTURE ENVIRONMENT The caper is one of our best-known wild shrubs but not for its aesthetic or biological value. The fame is entirely gastronomic: no ħobża biż-żejt would be complete with- out a dash of pickled caper buds! The spectacular flow- ers – now in full season – that look like purple fireworks frozen in mid-display are lost on most people. Indeed to the caper-picker one open flower is one less caper for the pickling jar. Many people show little restraint when har- vesting capers (M. kappar), and shrubs within easy reach are often entirely denuded of their flower buds, leaving lit- tle for the insects that depend on them; not to mention the damage to the shrub itself. Thankfully capers often grow out of vertical cliffs where insects can reach them but Homo insatiens can't. Caper flowers are very short-lived, opening early in the morning but already wilted by noon. The event is open for all ages and each participant can be accompanied by family members. MUŻA, the national-community art museum, offers a unique experience. Participants can ex- plore the extensive collections on display which are inspired by a careful selection of stories presented in four main sections. The historic architecture, purposely restored to house this new museum concept, is one other experience in its own right. During the tour, sign language interpreters will accompany the audience to translate what the curator is saying. The main aim of this event is to reach different audiences at the mu- seum and to make art accessible to all as much as possible. Participation is free of charge. However, those who would like to attend should book a place through Aġenzija Sapport. Those who are in possession of a Heritage Malta Student Passport or a Heritage Malta Senior Passport are encouraged to bring it along with them for this tour so that it may be stamped. This is the second activity of the sort which is being organised by Heritage Malta. The first event was held at St Paul's Catacombs in Rabat, and more are being planned. Tour starts at 1pm and ends at 3pm. For more information, contact Aġenzija Sap- port on 2256800 or Heritage Malta on 2395 0360. An exclusive sign language tour at MUZA The historic architecture, purposely restored to house this new museum concept, is one other experience in its own right
