13 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 7 AUGUST 2019 CULTURE THE University of Malta presents an exhibition ac- knowledging women at the University since their first enrolments in the early 20th century. The exhibition – titled Hors Concours and curated by Pro- fessor Raphael Vella – speaks about the first group of wom- en who acquired a third-level education in Malta, juxtapos- ing their stories with work by contemporary female artists working in Malta. Women such as Blanche Huber and Tessie M. Camill- eri were pioneers in a Mal- tese context, studying and graduating alongside classes of otherwise exclusively male students. The exhibition traces wom- en at the university from that time to the present day, when female students actually out- number males in almost all subjects. Contemporary artists Kris- tina Borg, Charlie Cauchi, Amber Fenech and Marger- ita Pulè will be showing work at the exhibition, responding to the theme of the exhibi- tion, and acknowledging per- haps that parity in numbers at university does not auto- matically mean an equal ex- perience. Hors Concours will take place at the University of Malta Valletta Campus from 31 October to 29 November 2019. Hors Concours exhibition FOOD is omnipresent in Maltese so- ciety.
