08.08.19 16 TOWNSCAPES THE Planning Authority's third edi- tion of the Irrestawra Darek scheme is still open for property owners who together with neighbouring residents wish to restore the facade of their properties within an urban conserva- tion area. As an incentive to promote a more homogenous approach and improve the streetscapes of our traditional vil- lage cores, the Irrestawra Darek 2019 scheme had included an allocation of €1 million for this specific purpose. In such cases, property owners are eli- gible to benefit from up to €20,000 for their property on condition that the cluster of residential properties adds to not less than 50m of the streets- cape. The properties need to be within an Urban Conservation Area and may include a commercial component. The Authority has to date validated eight submissions whereby property owners came together and submitted an application to restore the entire or part of a streetscape. One appli- cation in Birgu involves a streetscape comprising 14 properties. Within this same category, the Authority received valid submissions to improve streets- capes within the locality of Hamrun, San Giljan, Ta' Xbiex, Birgu, Zejtun, Attard and Xaghra, Gozo. With funds still available within this category, the Planning Authority en- courages neighbouring property own- ers within village core area to team and benefit from this one time op- portunity.
