17 COMMERCIAL maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 21 AUGUST 2019 MAPFRE has met some very important objectives in its commitment to sustainability, most notably through its MAP- FRE Sin Plástico campaign. In 2018 MAPFRE recycled almost 1,000 tons of paper and processed over 4,000 tons of waste in total. This year, MAPFRE launched the MAPFRE Sin Plástico cam- paign to help it contribute to the circular economy in Spain and Portugal. In total, more than 80 percent of employees in these countries participated, with over 9,000 co-workers now using reusable glass bottles and filtered water dispensers. This small change has prevented the use of 1.5 million single-use plastic bot- tles. The MAPFRE Sin Plástico commitment, which forms part of the Sustainability Plan 2019–2021, has enabled all sin- gle-use plastic to be replaced with 100-percent sustainable packaging materials, both in vending machines and in can- teens and cafeterias at MAP- FRE's corporate headquarters in Spain and at its Portuguese headquarters. MAPFRE has also replaced 2 million single-use plastic cups with biodegradable cups, and has installed filtered and pu- rified water dispensers with quality control, thus helping to improve the well-being of em- ployees and clients. The objective of this cam- paign is to achieve 100 percent coverage at MAPFRE's facili- ties in Spain and Portugal be- fore the end of the year. Thanks to projects like this one, MAP- FRE is one of the 15 Spanish companies forming part of the 2018 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, and is considered by CDP to be one of the world's leading companies in the fight against climate change. MAPFRE's commitment to the environment LUFTHANSA Technik Malta is now of- ficially prepared to carry out all overhaul work on the Airbus A350-1000. The com- pany has received the requisite license from the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA). The recent certification amends the ap- proval to perform overhaul work on the baseline A350-900, which was already received in 2018. With immediate effect, Lufthansa Technik Malta is hence also permitted to work on the stretched ver- sion of the twin-engine widebody. The necessary overhaul lines and docks were already adapted to the new subtype at the time of the earlier approval. Marcus Motschenbacher, Chief Execu- tive Officer of Lufthansa Technik Malta, said: "With this approval, we have further cemented our leading position as the only Airbus widebody overhaul site in the Eu- ropean Lufthansa Technik network. We are therefore very well positioned to pro- vide long-term technical support for the entire A350 range. This is a great success for the Lufthansa Technik Group." Already in 2018, more than 50 employ- ees of Lufthansa Technik Malta attained the necessary qualifications and practi- cal knowledge to work on the A350-900. These skills are now also being used to perform overhauls on the larger type. A to- tal of more than 3 million dollars has been invested in the preparation for overhauls of both types, with the first three custom- ers expected until the end of this year Lufthansa Technik Malta receives approval for Airbus A350-1000 overhauls
