22.08.19 TRENDSETTERS MASSIMO COSTA THE drive throughout Europe towards more environmental- ly-friendly vehicles keeps accel- erating, and IoScoot has the hon- our of having been a pioneer in this green effort when it comes to motorbikes. Last year, IoScoot introduced first electric motorbike sharing to Malta. Its initial fleet consists of 40 bikes, which can be picked up and dropped off anywhere within the areas in which its service is avail- able. Its service currently covers Malta's main hubs: Valletta, Msi- da, Gzira, Sliema and St Julian's. e motorbikes - dubbed "eMo- tos" - are fully electric, equipped with a motor which enables a maximum speed of 45km/h, which is all a commuter needs to get around the island. e eMotos can carry up to two people and can be ridden on any road in Malta and Gozo. Once the trip is over, the rider can then leave the eMoto in an area defined in the map available through the service's mobile app - Meep App - enabling the next user to find the motorbike within a reasonable distance. Using the service is straightfor- ward and starts by downloading the Meep App on iOS or Android, and signing up on Meep. e user should then select My Meep from the app's menu, go to Transport Providers and selecting IoScoot. IoScoot will then verify the users driving licence within 24 hours. Once verification is done, users need only to launch the Meep App, activate IoScoot, locate the closest eMoto through the app, and then follow the instructions to unlock the motorbike. e commute can then start. Once a rider is done with the eMoto, they should park it in the desig- nated areas as indicated in the app, place the helmet back inside the top case, and finish the rental session in Meep. e users will be able to park the motorbikes in any parking space where normal motorbikes are able to park. However the rent- al will continue unless the user parks within the highlighted ar- eas. e tariff plan for using the eMotos is simple - users only pay for the minutes they ride the mo- torbike, with no fixed charges. e tariff is of 25c per minute, which includes battery and insur- ance costs. IoScoot gets commuters to their destination quickly and without harming the environment
