It has so much to offer apart from its plenty iconic landmarks and the usual touristic attractions. Get the lowdown on lesser-known things to do, and enjoy the capital on a local scale. Sleepover at the zoo The zoo in London is the world's old- est scientific zoo and a must for any animal-lover visiting the capital. Skip the daytime queues and instead dis- cover London Zoo at night to see what happens after dark. Sleep a few metres away from lions at London Zoo's Gir Lion Lodges, which forms part of the Land of the Lions exhibit, which is designed to tell the story of Asiatic lions - how they live and the conservationists trying to save them. The lodges are a collection of nine bright and colourful huts, made to look like the guesthouses in India's Gir Forest. Each lodge has a mural of the animal it's named after. This unforgettable experience in- cludes morning, sunset and night tours of the zoo. During the night walk, look out for bats, hear zoo histo- ry and see nocturnal aardvarks, which are normally asleep when day visitors peek at them. Visit the Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret Housed in the attic of St. Thomas Church, Britain's oldest surviving op- erating theatre looks much as it might have in 1822, the pre-anaesthetics and pre - antiseptic era. The museum looks back at the horror of 19th-cen- tury medicine. Here, visitors can get an insight into what surgery was like during this era whilst learning about past operating techniques, practices and natural rem- edies. If you're a scientist, a historian, a medic or just someone who loves a bit gruesome gore, this place is for you. The museum was recently refur- bished and reopened in early 2018. All trips for kayaking are planned around the tide to ensure that it assists you in whatever direction you're pad- dling, allowing you to relax and enjoy the views.
