ISSUE OF TENDERS MATTHEW VELLA ANTI-POACHING campaigners were shot with a shotgun which left the rear of the vehicle they were trav- elling in riddled with lead pellets. The Campaign Against Bird Slaughter patrol car was parked on the main road in Girgenti valley, when unknown persons shot at the activists' car. "Our team was out to monitor pro- tected birds of prey flying towards the roost in Buskett. When the vol- unteers returned to their car, they realised that someone had shot at the vehicle from a short distance with a shotgun. "The rear of the vehicle was pep- pered with shot damage and dozens of lead pellets still embedded in the sheet metal," CABS team leader Fio- na Burrows said. The police were called and docu- mented the damage. As it was al- ready dark, they left without search- ing the area. CABS are offering €2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the persons responsible for the shot damage to their car in Girgenti. Witnesses are urged to contact the police or CABS. "We are relieved that no one got hurt but we are concerned that two such incidents occurred within a couple of days," CABS president Heinz Schwarze said in a statement. The incident happened just three days after a CABS report led to a ma- jor police operation in the same area. Last Friday CABS members called the police after filming a protected Bee-eater being shot down by hunt- ers. The footage was shown to ALE of- ficers who searched the area and questioned several hunters which they found close to the scene. Despite an intensive search the bird could not be found. "We don't know if the previous po- lice action on the 6th triggered the incident from yesterday. What we can say is that clearly some hunters were not very happy with our pres- ence in this area," Burrows said, add- ing that after the police left, hunters hurled insults at the birdwatchers and two exposing their blank back- side to female CABS volunteers. In a separate incident on Monday afternoon, two members of another CABS team monitoring bird migra- tion in Bingemma were hit by mul- tiple lead shot fired at a range of ap- proximately 50 metres. "When we arrived at our watch- point our team was spotted by a hunter who immediately ducked down behind a wall and very short- ly after four consecutive shots were fired in our direction with the pel- lets raining down and hitting us. No birds were seen flying at the time," CABS volunteer Marvin Fehn, from Germany, said. "Though it was more like a lead shower than a direct hit, it was clearly an intentional threat," he added. Shots fired at bird-watchers' patrol car in Girgenti FIVE migrants rescued from a flimsy wooden boat 10 days ago by NGO vessel Alan Kurdi remain stranded just outside Maltese territorial waters. The five formed part of a group of 13 peo- ple rescued on 31 August in Malta's search and rescue area. MaltaToday understands that the closest ports of call at the time of the rescue were in Tunisia and the Italian island of Lampedusa. Malta has refused the ship entry but has carried out several medical evacuations over the past few days as the health and mental wellbeing of passengers deteriorat- ed. Some migrants on board the ship even attempted suicide by jumping into the sea. The Alan Kurdi, a vessel run by the Ger- man NGO Sea-Eye, is currently south of Malta just outside the 12-mile territorial zone after being refused entry by the au- thorities. Alan Kurdi has also been refused entry into Italy, a decision upheld yesterday even- ing by the new coalition government of the Movimento Cinque Stelle and Partito Democratico. Last week, Sea-Eye went to court in Malta to try and force the government to allow the disembarkation of the rescued migrants. Meanwhile, last night, the rescue ves- sel Ocean Viking run by Doctors Without Borders and SOS Mediterranee, took on board 84 migrants that were picked up at sea by the small sailing boat Josefa, run by German NGO Resqship. Malta, Italy continue to refuse entry to five migrants stranded at sea for 10 days
