In 'Your Home', the area dedicated to all things green during the festival, NGOs, government organisations, university student associa- tions and Malta's leading sci- entists and artists, will bring the reality that the natural environment is yours to cher- ish to the fore. As Da Vinci once said, "Na- ture is the source of all true knowledge…". In Your Home, Science in the City plans to share a smidgen of this knowledge with the audience. Birdlife Malta will help visi- tors understand the travelling patterns and stamina of birds which use the Maltese islands as a pit stop, on their annual 10,000km journey, enjoying pine, carob and buckthorn trees on the way. The Malta Institute of Earth Systems, University of Malta, will show how to distinguish between different types of en- demic and indigenous plants of the Maltese Islands. Stands in Your Home will address how humans affect the planet, through educa- tion and by offering solutions. Greenroads Limited and Pro- ject Aegle Foundation (PAF) have teamed up to introduce a country wide challenge where commuters will be recognised and rewarded for their posi- tive mobility behaviour. Wasteserv will be high- lighting the effect waste gen- eration has on our health through games and quizzes. Those concerned about the impact of human waste on the environment, can learn about the introduction of the scheme which allows people to deposit waste for change, as part of a Zero Waste Initia- tive. At the GSD marketing stand, visitors will be invited to try out the "reverse vending ma- chine", and to learn new ways to minimise our impact on the world around us. The Environment and Re- sources Authority (ERA) will showcase their interactive activity 'Fair with Air', which allows the audience to play with fun and educational pro- jections on air pollution. Science in the City is part of the EU-wide celebration- Eu- ropean Researchers' Night. It is funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the Horizon 2020 Program of the EU, and a number of cor- porate sponsors. Following various consultation meetings earlier this year on how best to improve access to the foreshore, with both local councils, MIDI has sponsored the reinstatement of path- ways and staircases to allow easier and safer access around the Tigne Penin- sula. Moreover, MIDI is providing a free shuttle service on weekends to shut- tle visitors to the foreshore under Fort Manoel at Manoel Island in order to avoid walking the distance in the hot sun. "The works sponsored by MIDI has ensured that the general public can enjoy unobstructed access to a larger part of the Tigne Point foreshore" said Sliema Mayor Anthony Chircop. Under the Manoel Island Guardian- ship Agreement signed last year, MI- DI had pledged to ensure that access to the foreshore is preserved and that designated swimming zones are pro- vided for the enjoyment of the general public during the bathing season. "It is positive initiatives such as these which will confirm the local councils' commitment to the local community; with this shuttle service for example, access to swimming zones on Manoel Island have been made much more accessible" Gzira Mayor Conrad Borg Manché said. Another initiative undertaken by MIDI this summer relates to the re- instatement of the slipway on Manoel Island which is primarily used by lo- cal enthusiasts. "The upgrading of the slipway has been received enthusiasti- cally by local users" said the President of the Ghaqda Sajjieda Dilettanti, Gzira. "This support to both local councils to establish safer access to the fore- shore and the initiative to upgrade the slipway at Manoel Island is part of MIDI's ongoing commitment to the local community" Mark Portelli, MIDI CEO said. MIDI sponsors initiatives proposed by Gzira and Sliema local councils Fresh air, trees and trash at Science in the City
