Spool-like toy (2-2) PARTLY CLOUDY UV: 6 SHOWERS UV: 6 29 0 / 22 0 26 0 / 21 0 Weekend activity showcases weightlifting FEELS LIKE 31 0 FEELS LIKE 28 0 THE Malta Weightlifting Association or- ganised a #BEACTIVE Competition last Saturday evening at the Kirkiop Sports complex, with the aim of showcasing the sport and giving spectators a glimpse into what a weightlifting competition like. Four teams were formed, composed of seven female and male athletes of differ- ent age groups. The team Thunderstorm finished on top of the podium thanks to the strong lifting by Tenishia Thornton, Kyle Mi- callef, Rylee Borg, Matthew Abela, Na- than Mifsud and Craig Pace. 14-years-old Tenishia Thornton (-49kg) lifted 54kg Snatch & 62kg Clean & Jerk. She also took an extra attempt on 66kg and was successful. She managed to break a number of national records in this meet alone. All six attempts were national records in the U-15 49kg category, U-17 49kg category. Thornton also broke the snatch national record in the U-20 49kg catego- ry, and also two snatch attempts and two total results were national records in the U-23 age group. Kyle Micallef also had a great showing. Weighing in at only 81.3kg which is less than the 94/85kg category he used to compete last year, he finished with 111kg in the snatch and 137kg in the clean and jerk. In second place, the team Lion Jaw had very good result with nine-year-old Julia Grima breaking her own national record when she finished with 18kg in the snatch and 22kg in the clean and jerk portion of the competition. Other athletes included Rodmar Pulis and Kieran Mifsud, Kayden Pace, Silvio Mallia, Andy Grech and Keith Azzopardi. In third place, the team Viper Venom registered great results from young 16 year old athlete athlete Tristan Zammit who finished with a 100kg in the snatch and 120kg in the clean and jerk breaking a national record in the process. Vlad Baldacchino also managed a na- tional record in the 102kg category with his 129kg snatch. His massive snatch along with 145kg in the clean and jerk gave him a solid total of 274kg. Other athletes in the team were Kim Camilleri Lagana, Ryan Degiorgio, Owen Camilleri, Lugher Debattista and Samuel Darmanin. Athlete Brian Muscat, who is on the national team and expected to compete next weekend at the Mediterranean Cup in San Marino, was part of the team called Hurricanespin. He managed a great effort of 105kg snatch and 137kg clean and jerk. Other team members were Martin Pisani, Shaun Ciantar, Kayleigh Mangion, Ali- yah Gatt, Lyla Tabone and Luke Treeby Ward.
