24.10.19 2 NEWS MISSINTECH, an NGO seeking to bridge the gender gap in the ICT sector, will be organising its next workshop this Saturday. Titled 'Bats & Bots', this Hallow- een themed event will be open to both girls and boys aged be- tween 6 and 13 and will promote science, technology, engineer- ing and mathematics (STEM) through different activities. Taking place at the Melita offic- es in Mriehel, 'Bats & Bots' will also give the children present, and their parents, an opportu- nity to explore the digital world using robots. Founded by female ICT univer- sity students in 2016, MissInTech has organised seven previous workshops, each attended by 20 to 25 children. Each workshop is given a particular theme to help get and retain the attention of the young participants. Run by a team of eight volun- teers, MissInTech is also sup- ported by Melita which, as a certified equal opportunities em- ployer, provides connectivity and logistical support to the group's workshops and other activities which promote science to both girls and boys. Rowena Chappell, MissInTech's PRO, said, "It's a magical moment every time a child uses robots for the first time. When they realise that they are the ones making the robot interact in the way they want it to, they're always incredi- bly proud of themselves. We look forward to creating more magi- cal moments like these through which we are also helping young girls and boys to fall in love with science and technology." BOV will be offering its digi- tal wallet services to Apple Pay, Garmin Pay and an application for android phone users. BOV Head of Card Payments Franco Xuereb told Business- Today that the bank was fo- cused on the increased safety and security that comes with having a digital wallet. "Digital wallets are locked up with a pin code and smart phones can be locked with a pin code and even with face identifi- cation, providing a level of secu- rity that is lacking when some- one steals a person's credit cards or online identities," he said. "In addition, all of a consum- er's credit card and banking details are heavily encrypted by digital wallet applications." Xuereb said he expects the younger generation to be among the most frequent users of the service. "Young people are more aware of the existing technologies available on the market, and we are expecting a lot of users from that age group," he said. Xuereb told BusinessToday that since upgrading the bank's cards to being compatible with contactless POS machines, the number of transactions under €20 had shot up. "70% of all transactions under €20 are now carried through contactless payment," he said. As to mobile banking, he said that customer were increas- ingly choosing to make use of the service, preferring to have a centralised destination to mon- itor their accounts. "People are not even access- ing internet banking, and pre- fer to carry out their financial deeds on their mobile devices," Xuereb said. And the BOV mobile app is expected to receive a facelift, as he says the bank is listening to the needs of its customers. "We will be enhancing our mobile application, as we feel that it is where most people prefer to carry out their day to day banking needs," he said.
