KURT SANSONE A passport agent's boastful claims that he enjoyed privi- leged access to the authorities have been debunked in an investigation carried out by the IIP regulator. The regulator found that claims made by a lawyer from Chetcuti Cauchi Agency that he could obtain citizen- ship for people with a criminal record were unfounded. The investigation had been ordered after Chetcuti Cauchi officials were secretly filmed in a French TV sting, claiming they had a 100% success rate and en- joyed close connections to politicians. The journalists were posing as representatives of a potential client. The lawyer had claimed that officials could close an eye for IIP applicants with a crim- inal record. DAVID HUDSON KEITH Schembri's decision to with- draw his libel case against Simon Busuttil rather than face cross-ex- amination was proof that the Prime Minster's Chief of Staff is indeed corrupt and trying to evade justice, the former PN leader said yesterday. "Every MP and every Maltese citizen can now safely turn to the Prime Minister's chief of staff Keith Schembri and tell him that he is cor- rupt," Busuttil said. Speaking during a parliamentary adjournment yesterday, the PN MP once again lashed out at Schembri for dropping his libel case rather than face cross. On Monday, Schembri withdrew a defamation suit against Busuttil after the court warned him there would be dire consequences if he persisted in refusing to answer questions being put to him by Bu- suttil's lawyer, PN MP Jason Azzo- pardi, during cross ex- amination.
