TRAVEL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 24 NOVEMBER 2019 10 A gem in northwestern Cyprus, Pafos was the capi- tal of culture in ancient times and once again cel- ebrated this accolade in 2017 when it reigned as a European Capital of Culture. Visiting Pafos in mid-November is an unforget- table experience that will see visitors in awe of the region's weather, history, culture and places of interest. Visitors are genuinely spoiled for choice, be it for its long and fascinating history, or the visual de- lights which have been unearthed and preserved and exhibited to allow one to dip into the past and go back in time to relive the region's history. A visit to the Tombs of Kings, St Neophytos monastery and Englistra – the UNESCO Archae- ological Park by the harbour and the beautiful mosaics floors – were the highlight of the holiday. One cannot but notice what beauty Pafos has to offer. And for those who are more into romance and legend, the Baths of Aphrodite are a place not to be missed. The weather in the region plays a huge part in al- lowing visitors and locals alike to venture all year round onto nature trails, roads and tracks ideal for those keen walkers and trekking groups. Stopping in the Old Town and enjoying a walk through the renovated Old Town area, meeting the locals and shopping at the little traditional outlets is an experience that visitors from all over the world will enjoy. Pafos is surrounded by golden sandy beaches which could still be enjoyed in mid-autumn, whether for just sunbathing in the warm sun or taking a fresh dip in the clear blue waters. Traditional local taverns are all over the region and they excel when it comes to the art of Meze. With the abundance of home-grown fruit and vegetables, diners can relax and relish either a Cypriot style meal, or dishes from international- ly-based menus, not forgetting an accompanying bottle of fine local wine. Active sports holidays are very popular through- out the year and the region hosts a series of fun runs, as well as professional triathlons and mara- thons. A holiday in Pafos is an absolute guarantee of re- laxation. The region has a lot to offer and visitors often find themselves wanting to keep going back. Ryanair flies to Pafos from Malta every Thursday with return flights every Sunday. A treasure trove of history and culture
