The film opens in New York with an old woman, living in a crammed apartment full of old photos, who outwits a burglar and forces him to listen to her stories. She recounts the saga of Luke and Elijah, a couple freewheeling cowboys during the heyday of the American West. A fight over a whore named Lily ends their friendship; Elijah marries her while Luke turns into an embittered bandit, travelling the world. He eventually settles in with some cattle rustlers in Macedonia. MONDAY River of No Return – New Series [Documentary] 21:00 on Discovery Channel (Channel 400) In the rugged backcountry of one of America's most dangerous and scenic stretches of land lies Idaho's Frank Church Wilderness. This rough and inhospitable terrain can only be accessed via bush plane or on a jet boat journey through the largest un- dammed river in North America, the Salmon River, also known as "The River Of No Return". In this wilderness, a tight-knit com- munity of homesteaders rely on themselves, their neighbours and their survival skills to endure the challenging conditions and isolat- ing winters. TUESDAY Wishmaster (1997) [Film] 19:00 on AMC Channel A hideous Persian djinn (meaning "genie") from the 12th century is trapped in a beautiful opal that is hidden in a statue ends up in the hands of 20th-century Los Angeles gemologist Alexandra Amberson (Tammy Lauren). While examining the rare stone, Alexan- dra inadvertently releases the ma- levolent djin (Andrew Divoff) who wants to take over the world but cannot until his awakener makes three wishes. As soon as he is released, the djin abandons his natural form as a disgusting cock- roach monster in favour of the handsome Nick (Chris Lemmon), another gemologist. Unfortunately for the djin, she is not the wishful sort. While trying to convince her to wish, Nick amuses himself by granting the wishes of others in horrible ways. WEDNESDAY Chicago Med – Season 5 [Medical Drama Series] 8pm on FOX Life (Channel 304) More life-or-death emergencies await the heroic doctors and nurses of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center in Season 5 of the heart- pounding medical drama from executive producer Dick Wolf. The exhilarating series continues to delve into the daily crises of Chicago's newest state-of-the-art trauma centre, balancing cutting- edge medicine with the intense personal drama of the hospital staff. This season, the cases hit especially close to home, with several members of the team facing dire medical issues of their own. Charge nurse Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) faces a troubling diagnosis, while Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) has been seriously injured in a car accident. THURSDAY Midnight Witness (1992) [Film] 8.45pm on AMC Channel (Channel 312) Los Angeles couple Paul (Paul Johansson) and Katy (Karen Moncrieff) witness a police officer (Maxwell Caulfield) brutally beat and kill a motorist outside their window. Because Paul was able to videotape the vicious murder, he and Katy suddenly find themselves on the run from the violent and corrupt police. To make matters worse, the couple are framed for the crime they witnessed. FRIDAY My Brilliant Friend S1 Ep.4: "Dissolving Margins" [Drama Series] 9pm on Melita More (Channel 315) Entering high school, Elena vows to stay ahead of Lila, academically and romantically. Lila eschews a parade of suitors vying for her affection, choosing instead to focus on her ambitions in the shoe shop. Promising a better future for the neighbourhood, Stefano Carracci invites Elena, Lila and their families over for New Year's Eve. Things escalate quickly during a fireworks face-off with the Solaras, leading Lila to see a new side of her brother Rino. SATURDAY Legends of the Wild [Documentary] 8pm on Discovery Channel (Channel 400) Around the world, there are startling reports of strange animal attacks against humans, new apex predators changing the natural order, and sightings of mysterious creatures. This compelling series follows two wilderness experts and childhood friends as they investigate, document and try to solve some of the most incredible mysteries.
